Win7 Taskbar view options

I installed same Windows 7 on laptop (pic 2) as was on my pc (1), I assume it was customized for the performance of the laptop. But I noticed a difference in the task bars preview folder thing. I've compared Performance Options to the two and it doesn't seem like the option is located there. Sooo, how do I switch to the more minimal view?

(sorry if this was suppose to go in Operating System section. It's just that it would have taken days to get one reply in that ghost town.)

Right click on empty task bar -> Properties = Task bar options?

Nvm, nothing there.

That hover-menu is related to Aero peek. Search more that deals with Aero peek. Maybe under display menu?

Nvm, aero peek is not the same thing.

Of course, that was the first place I checked. I didn't see any option for what I'm asking about. You have Taskbar Buttons options, but that is only about how they hide the extra apps open.

edit: To specify, those options only include: Always combine & hide labels, Combine when taskbar is full, and don't combine.

I'd like to know the same fucking thing. Feels like I checked everywhere, but found nothing to turn this off... wtf.

I use the small icons, but I always combine. What happens when the icons go off the right side, does it give you another row with an arrow like XP did?

They just shrink, but I'm pretty sure the last time my taskbar was full was before browser tabs existed.

I've been using small icons since I first bought Windows 7, just switched the other day. I had decided to get rid of a bunch of desktop Icons and use primarily my taskbar for access so I made taskbar icons larger size. I'm liking it so far, with my larger monitor it isn't taking up too much screen or anything. In certain situations I still make them small for a bit, sometimes even hide taskbar. (I hate the little black line hiding it leaves behind :[ If I hide, hide!)

Anyways, the workaround listed above does not work for me. The steps are for Windows 7 prof/ulti. Home edition doesn't even give you a Local Group Policy Editor :( And the regedit fix also doesn't work. I logged off, then tried restarting, then confirmed that it was correct. Now I guess I'll try the download regedit auto add.. Doubt it will work but maybe the step-by-step instructions were off or something.

Other than that, you have the disable Aero fix and I'd rather not get rid of everything.


Edit: Rather than let some baddies edit my regedit I just checked it in text edit - & it is the same as instructions. So yeah.. Anyone else have any ideas?
edit2: I'm just going to try all the suggestions listed in that pages comments sections. Looks like there is quite a few, something is bound to work.

Blah, 7 Taskbar Tweaker only lets you disable thumbnail preview which doesn't allow anything at all to come up when you hover.

It seems this is ingrained in Aero, and Win7 use to have the ability to go back but for some reason they removed it in later editions of Windows 7. To disable, best bet is to pick a non Aero theme I guess.

Go to Adjust Visual Effects and uncheck "Enable Desktop Composition."

Edit: I guess I should note that your system won't use Aero if you do that and based on your pic 2 it looks like your laptop is not running Aero.

Windows Aero is not working on the non folder view. I had this happen to my desktop the other night. Check your themes, go back to a windows 7 aero theme, and use your custom background that should get it working again.

Depends on his laptop. Some older laptops can run Win7 but don't have the GPU power to run Aero so it can't be enabled and they automatically default to the non-Aero view.

It's a fairly new G4-1015DX with Radeon HD 4250, P360 dual core 2.3GHz, 3gb of RAM. It runs Windows 7 fine. I could turn on Aero, it's just that it was set to Aero by default when I installed.

I ran the Rate Your Computer application on Windows 7 and came up with some interesting results:

1st time I ran the computer, fresh from Best Buy, it showed graphics rated at something like 7.3, pretty ridiculous consider this is an integrated hd 4250, and my gigabyte 6850 gets something like 7.8. This time I ran it, it showed 4.0, which seems about right.

Though now, the harddisk was rated 5.9, that's a 5400rpm hdd. My 7200rpm hdd only gets 5.5.

Conclusion: Windows performance rating software is complete crap.

You guys don't find having a ton of shiny boxes at the bottom distracting? I've been trying out the non-combine option for past few days, I like not having to go through that lame aero-preview thing but I'm finding the highlighted whiteness of the boxes pretty distracting. It would make sense if they did it to the window that is on top, but everything you open up has it. Pretty annoying when you have many things open and your task bar is full of distracting white glassy boxes.


edit: I just wish they would allow us a little more control on what uses aero and what doesn't.
