Win7 - hosts.ini

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (no extension)

Remember to run notepad or editor with Admin rights to edit the file.

My Win 95, 98, 2K, and XP all have a hosts.ini sitting in that directory.

Do you guys keep the extension viewing turned off?

Use Google for a search on hosts.ini - multiple references show up for Vista and older systems.

I don't have a Win9X machine handy to check, but AFAIK it's never had an extension. For the same reason that it's under an "etc" directory. It was taken directly from unix which kept the file in /etc, e.g. /etc/hosts. Most of the Google search results I see are posts from people that don't know any better.

I dont know why you have a .ini..... Im on 98se and I just have 2 files named "hosts" NO EXTENTION... (One is called hosts.2 (in the system directory))
 
same here, no extension and as far as I remember, never had one either. Ini files will open by default with notepad, anytime I have modded the hosts file it required me to select notepad to open it.
 
Anyone else? Maybe OP should make a poll just to be sure.
