Hey Everyone,
I plan on getting Win7 64bit OEM or Retail in the next few weeks. One thing I really need to know is how Win7 handles setting up RAID arrays. I am used to the easy to setup Linux way of doing things. I have setup RAID many times in WinXP. But I was wanting to know if they improved setting up RAID or not?

Thanks..

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, but two things that come to mind:

1) Win7, like Vista, allows RAID drivers to be installed from USB or CD/DVD during an OS install. XP required a floppy disk.
2) Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate (at least) now support software RAID 1 using dynamic disks. Software RAID 5 is still not supported. Previously, redundant software RAID was only supported on Windows Server editions.

Thanks RM, you got pretty close to answering my question. I got two WD Raptor hard drives that I normally run as RAID0 (aka: fake raid, performance stripping). The headache has been more less issues that are my fault. I have a dang upgrade of both XP and VISTA. I have to bloody install XP with the RAID then install VISTA and the new drivers again after installing XP.

I was hoping the whole process would have been made easier, in linux you dont need the raid drivers for setting it up unless you got a real RAID controller. Its just simply easily done at during partition setup. I was hoping with all the changes MS may have caught on and made setting up RAID a easy process as well.

You say it can be done by mem stick or CD/DVD now. Thats a small plus at least now. I had to keep a floppy drive in my PC just for RAID with XP, in addition since I used the floppy for XP I didnt try anything else new with VISTA.

The update drivers for my mobo only list Vista 64bit. I hope those will work smoothly for Win7 64bit.

Thanks again.

I'm using RAID-0 in Windows 7 x64. I was already running it with Vista x64. Did an in place upgrade and Windows 7 kept the same ICH10R RAID controller drivers, so I didn't have to do a thing.
