I am about to take the plunge with Win2K. I did a search here and couldn't find anything and am not sure if this is a really hot deal or not (but it's a lot cheaper than anywhere else).

Direct Deals has it.

What do you think? And is there any advantage to doing a clean install over the upgrade version?

Be gentle, this is my first posted Hot Deal.

EDIT: Title changed to reflect other's updated info. Read on . . .

Feb 27 EDIT: Received it from #9 Software for $68. Nicely packed. I am satisfied - Win2K disk will do an upgrade or a fresh install although I am having a very hard time making a new partition . . .

I would probably spend the extra cash and invest in a full version CD since that can do both the upgrade and the fresh installation.

what you could do is buy the upgrade so that you have a legal copy, than have someone burn you the full version of win2k and just do a clean install.

Jovack2, then what's the point of buying the software? I fail to understand the meaning of buying the software then having someone burn you a copy so you can let the one you bought sit in one corner.

Thanks I want to try win2k but wouldn't pay the rediculus price. this is more reasonable. What about whistler though? Isn't it based on win2k? Will it be as stable?

Don't buy the full version if you qualify for the upgrade. You don't need the full version to do a clean install. The only difference is the upgrade version will ask you to insert either W95/98 or NT CD during the installation.

DugnDog is correct.

You need to upgrade from WinNT.

<<Qualified Products Windows NT Workstation 3.51, 4.0 . . .

Corresponding Upgrade Windows 2000 Professional

Note: Windows 95 and Windows 98 Upgrade Advantage/Maintenance coverage does not qualify for free upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional.>>

Now - probably a dumb question - from #9Software I see Win2K No COA for $68.

What's COA? EDIT: Good, someone else has this question.

And are you certain the upgrade version only asks for the Win98 (in my case) disk for a clean install?

CompUSA price is after 2 rebates of over $100. Rebates suck, a real corporate rip off. I don't have a problem pirating software from companies that have ripped me off on rebates.

COA = Certificate of Authenticity.

I guess I figured it out.

How important is it and has anyone purchased from 9software.com?

EDIT: I was typing and someone else posted a minute earlier.

resellerratings.com has no info on #9software.com. Anyone with experience?

$68 for Win2K seems like a really hot deal.

Forget CompUSA - I am not upgrading from WinNT and could not use the $70 MIR.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me.
Quote from #9 Software:
"Upgrade
OEM.
Includes CD,
manual,
license on CD.
Requires
previous
Microsoft
operating
system. NO
COA."

I'm looking for an upgrade path from NT4. Is it legal without COA?
I have never seen a OS CD with the license on the CD.???? If it is legal to be sold wothout COA whats the use of the COA then?

Anyone.......

Well, I went ahead and ordered from #9 Software (on my low-limit credit card).

Total price was $74.29 ($68.00 + $6.29 UPS ground to California).

Wish me luck and I'll report back when (if) I receive the software. I placed the order with Beverly over the phone and got an email confirmation within 5 minutes after hanging up.

EDIT: I was assured (Beverly had to ask someone else) that I could register this product with MS; that it was legal. She said the COA was desired mostly by coporate users.

When I bought Norton System Works 2001Pro, the license was on the CD. I am assuming this is because it is an OEM product.

My win2k upgrade upgrades any windows installation. i used a win98 cd when it asked for one. maybe there are other versions that only upgrade NT.

I will wait for Windows XP (Whistler) I have been running Whistler beta 2410 for a couple of months now on my second machine.....very stable, nice gui, only problem I had was recognition of my burner, fixed that after reading the README.TXT on the cd. Waiting on new beta with LUNA.

Checked MS site. The version upgrade is 149 (after $70 rebate) and only upgrades NT, the product upgrade is 219 and upgrades 95/98. I've used mine on several machines, and it doesn't care what version I use (we have a site license for 2k, so the CDs I use might be different from the retail).

Windows 2000 Professional - $1
Windows 2000 Server - $1
Not giving Microsoft my hard earned cash - Priceless

Microsoft complaing about people stealing their intellectual property, that has to be some kind of all time world record for hypocrisy. I wish I was more religous so I could take comfort that Hell would have a special place for people like Gates.

If you know any1 that is going to school at The University of Texas colleges have them pick u up one. I go to UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio) and got Win2000 Proffessional with service pack 1 for 16.18 and WinME for only $8.09. Check it out! These are full versions not upgrades. Supposedly any UT system school will work!:D
