Win2k - WinXP Mapping Drive Issue - Help Please

My laptop is running Win2k and my desktop is running WinXp. The computers are both on the same network and I can see the names of the respective computers when I attempt to map a drive. I have set the portions of my drive I want shared on each computer but cannot see any drives to map to.

I read the FAQs but still am having difficulty. I am sure I am overlooking something simple.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Assuming the network is fine ( sounds lilke it is), your issue is permission based.
I'm assuming you have a workgroup implemented; describe the accounts you have set up and how your permissions are laid out.

This morning, after I booted up both computers, only the laptop could see the desktop (desktop was not seeing the laptop on the network). Both computers have Microsoft Network activated under network properties. I am using a hardware firewall - but this had never been a problem when both computers were running Win2k.

My Windows Network is called "HOME."

I do not log into my desktop with a user account if that is important. My desktop, running WinXP, has the folders I want set to sharing i.e., sharing this folder on the network checked. I do not see any persmissions like I do in Win2k.

I do log into my laptop. My laptop, running Win2k, has the folders I want set to sharing as well as having permissions. When I try to setup permissions, I look on the "HOME" network - however I don't see my desktop there like I do when I browse the network.

Can you help me map my desktop's share folders to the laptop before tackling the reverse?

Thanks.

Is it XP home or XP pro?
Either way, check that Netbios is not disabled in the TCP/IP properties> Advanced > WINS Tab.

You would also do well to create a user on both machines that has the same username and password.

I installed NetBios as you suggested and was able to map my desktop's drives with my laptop.

Any suggestions on getting the desktop to see the laptop's shared drives - I'm sure it has something to do with "permissions." The key is that I do not want to have to log into my desktop in order to map to the laptop's drives.

Thanks for your help!
