Win2k vs. WinXP

Kabob

I have the choice of putting Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro on my computer. Which is generally faster. Which is more stable? Which will work better with all the games I intend to play? 🙂

Both are fine for games... the difference in speed is probably very small. I've used both for games.

If you have the choice I guess you might as well go for the latest, XP. I only upgraded because I can get MS software free through my school.

either.
I generally prefer Win2K cause I honestly think it's a more reliable OS, but I've been using XP for a few months now with little problem.

I use W2K for games and graphics. Don't ask me why because I really can't give a solid answer. I just got used to W2K for games and have stayed that way. For the net and office apps I use XP. No rhyme or reason for either, but if I had to come up with one I would say that I have probably had fewer problems with W2K than with XP. Either one would be fine, so if you only have one choice go for XP. It boots faster if that's worth anything to you.

Hope this helps.

XP has the best support over all the other OSs, therefore, more updates, which means better scurity adn stability. As it is, win xp will last longer doing something intensive then win 2000. Windows 2000 also has ALOT of compatibility problems to work out still.

I've always found Win2000 to be the better of the two.

Less bloat, fast, reliable and no compatibility issues or security problems whatsoever here.

it's amazing how often this gets asked - I would go for XP. Not had a single issue for 18 months + now...

I use 2k...but if given the choice NOW, just go XP. Think of the future long term if anything I suppose.

I'd go XP without looking back. If you are worried about system speed and bloat, everything that is eye-candy can be disabled and made to look just like Win2K. You can disable hibernation in about 10 seconds and you can limit the size of system restore (or disable it) quickly if you so desire.

I change all my XP systems too look and act just like older Windows OSes and do the same for all of my users. Less learning curve for them, less headache for me and a quicker front end on older equipment.

so in summary, do whatever you want. they are both good (as windows goes), and everyone has their own preference.

Warcrow, the reason ArmchairAthlete said "uh-oh" is because gets asked so often and a lot of time it leads to a jolly old flamewar :brokenheart:

Isn't it sad that there is even now fanboys for 2 different versions of windows? 🙁

The only reason I would pick XP is that it has lots of inbuilt support for a lot of older, but post 2000 hardware than W2K.

I have used both and prefer win 2k, just my personal preference. It runs rock solid and isn't bloated like XP. I see that somebody metioned compatibility problems with 2k so I thought I would post this:
Compatibility Mode

This is a function built into Windows® XP, and added to
Windows® 2000 as of service pack 2.

(To enable it on Windows® 2000, execute the command
''regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll''
from the Run prompt or a command console(without the quotes). You will need
Administrator priveledges to enable this. Service Pack 2 or higher must be
installed. This will add a tab to execution shortcuts called 'Compatibility'.
You may want to check first to see if compatibility mode is already available.
Do not do this in Windows® XP -- you already have it active by default.)
Windows 2k is installed to "C:\winnt" on my system so I run this:
regsvr32 c:\winnt\apppatch\slayerui.dll

I hate the 2KPro GUI.

Use XP and disable all that un-needed sh*t in the preferences. Then it will be fast. Can't beat the GUI.

I prefer win2ksp4, XP has too many annoying "features".. ie like that damm instant messanger crap. Delete & it comes back after an update.

Jose
