having radeon as the video card in my main gaming rig, i have dismissed win2k as a gaming OS. however, by some time tomorrow i am expecting a shiny v5 5500 for my ICS/file server machine... if the performance in win2k is comparable to that of win98se, i might as well give win2k another try...

I know exaclty how you feel about win2k for gaming

I have a Voodoo 4 4500 PCI. Just last week I was forced to put on Win2k. To my surprise I noticed no difference between my performance in my games between win98se and win2k

I'm currently using the Win2k 1.04.00 Driver w/DX8

should work fine for you, try enabling triple buffering too

It's the same. I don't bother playing games on win98 anymore with my dual boot. I can never be bothered to reboot so I moved all my games to 2K and they run beautifully.

Windows 2000 is not a gaming platform. Not even Windeows ME is. I know many people who have gone back to Windows 98 SE to play games acceptably again. If Windows 98 OSR2.1 B had acceptable USB and AGP drivers than we'd all go back to that, too.

Really? You might find out different checking over at Rage3D. The much newer, and far more frequently updated beta drivers available there fix a lot of visual issues/compatabilities with games running under Windows 2000. If you also grab a tweaker such as RadeonTweaker, you can likely squeeze more FPS out of your rig than you're likely to see on most any review site (proportional to the CPU/memory setup of the reviewer's rig, of course :) ).

I have no complaints on both a Celeron/128MB RAM/Win2K Pro/(flashed & tweaked)Radeon LE, and a P2/128MB RAM/Win2K Pro/Voodoo Banshee setup at home---relative to my experiences with running the same games on those machines under Win98SE, for example. As a fellow Radeon-, and 3dfx-product user, my advice would also lay in not lending so much credence to 3DMark scores, as it seems to have been geared toward nVidia cards.

Check out the boards there for any further advice, or experiences.

As for the Banshee, I've noticed VoodooFiles has some great new Win2K drivers for it (not "official" :D ), and the site may have something available on the driver/tweak/advice-side for you, and your V5, too. Hope any of this helps.

i go to rage3d boards at least once every day, somehow it seemed there have been at least 1 extra reloeases of win9x version between beta releases. also, it is my understanding that fixing visual issues were more of a priority for win2k users whereas for win9x users it has been more of a speed upgrade that was expected from driver updates. even if the fps were nearly identical, privillege of less frequent restarts doesnt cut it for me; we already had a huge debate on win2k vs win9x, i know what i want and win9x does it very well for me :)

My 3D Mark 2001 score in win2k was about 100 points lower than in win98. Other than that, I don't notice much difference, except that win2k basically never crashes :)

according to some people on rage3d, diablo2 has hard time coping in win2k with radeon, and thats the game i play more than anything right now. my win98 never crashes either, pls dont attempt to convert me; it wont work :)

LOL, well if you like D2 you should like the Voodoo5, unsure how it will work in w2k thou.
you get the card yet?
I would use the 3dfx wqhl drivers first then maybe try out some custom drivers later.

well happygamer, thats one of the biggest reasons i was planning on getting a x3dfx card :) but somehow i got on a sweet deal, so it ended up being a v5 5500 instead of a v3 2000. oh well

just got the card! but now that the card would be used for diablo2 classic for more than anything, i will stick to win98. there is a known issue with a load screen delay when you use 800x600 hack in win2k, dont convince me to get the crappack either :)

Glad you're happy with your choice.

I was going to mention that, even though I have this Radeon in my main PC, that I still enjoy playing D2 most on my other PC w/Voodoo Banshee. For almost that reason alone, I'm very glad I kept that ol' card. Pretty stuff. :)
