Well so I'm helping out the old folks by upgrading one of their older PCs, it was originally an amd 233 or something similar. So anyways, new mother board, k6-2 500, 128mb dimm, and a western digital 20gb later and I'm off to set it up for them. Well besides the fact I burnt up a wire and caused some nice toxic smoke I wasn't having any problems. I don't think the burnt wire harmed anything at least that I could tell.
Well anyways, here's the problem. Windows2000 can not install on the thing. It seems to be some kind of ide controller issue, but i'm not sure. The board is a soyo 5ehm (baby AT) the hdd is a western digital 20gig wd200bb ata 100. I d/l the little app off of westerndigital's site and changed the hdd mode to udma33. low level formatted and fdisked again (I fdisked originally w/o setting the drive to udma 33 thought it might've made a difference) If I do the win2000 startup install with bootdisks and all it tells me it can not create the WINNT directory and I cannot continue with installation. I tried this a few times already, same results each time. If I just press restart on the box, I can't "sys" the C drive or format it either, gives me read errors and such. However if I do a hard reset and turn the pc off and on again, I can format the drive etc. I was able to install win98 with out any trouble to speak of. Then I tried to upgrade that win98 install, same thing but it tells me my C: drive is corrupted and can not be repaired. I ran the wd diagnostic tool on the drive and it didn't report any errors. Any suggestions? I don't know whether this could possibly be a drive problem, or maybe the ide controller on the mobo is funky. The mobo ide controller can only be udma33, and I set the hdd to udma33 so that shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks a lot!
