I have legit versions of both Win2K Pro and WinXP Pro. (I'll need to download the appropriate service pack.)

Anyone want to help me decide? Pros and Cons of each?

it really depends on what you plan on using the system for, they are both very comperable and it's very hard to make a "wrong" choice between these two.

Try both and decide on your own. It's a matter of personal preference as some swear one's faster while some swear one's more compatible with hardware/software. We all have difference hardware/software in our system and preference for the looks & feel of the OS. If you search in this forum, you'll find hundreds of responses regarding your question.

At work, I installed SP3 for Win 2k on three separate systems. On my personal workstation, I had nothing but trouble.
I ended up installing WinXP with SP1 and now everything is fine.

I installed SP3 on another workstation, and it seems to be running fine. No problems reported by the person using
the computer.

I installed SP3 on Windows 2k Terminal Server. I've had nothing but problems with that thing. In a few weeks, we're
going to do a reinstall and rollback to SP2.

SP2 seems to be the way to go. also not installing the automatic update "fix" seems to keep the winlogon.exe file from growing to 24K.

just personal anecdotal information.

I think I've decided to give WinXP SP1a a try. I can always go back...

Good choice GT, I`m using XP and SP1 on two computers with rock solid stability :) .

Personally, because of the stability I've had with both OSs (Windows 2000 on my laptop and Windows XP on my desktop) I make the decision based on memory sizes for non-gaming situations. 64 to 256 I use Windows 2000; 256 or greater I use Windows XP cause XP needs and handles large amounts of RAM better than Windows 2000 IMO.

I solely use Win2k w/SP3 and I have not had any problems at all. XP SP1 also seems to work fine too, but I do not like the bloat that comes with XP. Although, I do like the fact that it comes with Remote Desktop (Pro).

Windows XP doesnt handle large amounts of RAM better than 2K, they have (basically) the same kernel and handle RAM more or less the same. I would agree though that if you have 128-256MB of RAM without the prospect for upgrade it may be in your best interest to stick with Win 2K just because it doesnt have as much built-in that eats up RAM.

Both have worked great for me, but I prefer XP sp1 because I can do stupid things like cool desktop themes (w/ a uxtheme.dll hack, not via 3rd party software) and yzDock :)

Less than 256 megs of ram = windows 2k.
256 or more megs of ram = windows xp.
