Win2k sound problems

Hi, I have a clean install of Win2k, and my sound doesn't work, when i use winamp, the progress bar moves for a couple of seconds and stops. And in games, i have no sound. The weird thing is, that if I restart, it works, but then, for only one application. So if i restarted and it worked for diablo2, and then i try and play winamp, it gets messed up again.

My system is:
P3 650
ASUS P3V4X (1005 bios)
Diamond MX300 (with default win2k drivers)
geforce2
Diamond fireport 40
dlink NIC
linksys NIC

Any ideas? Is it an IRQ problem? And if so, how can i fix it?

Thanks in advance,
Tim

This should be a sound driver or configuration problem. My friend Jayman had troubles with this beta Aureal Win2k drivers.

Ah.....Aureal cards seem to have a lot of problems with their drivers under Win2K. There doesn't really seem to be a solution that I have seen..... A lot of people have just gone with an SBLive instead.

Well the BSOD i'm getting sometimes says something, "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" I'm using the default Win2k drivers because I think aureal.com and a3d.com are down. Any other suggestions?

Jazz,

I am having the EXACT same problem with my soundcard. I just upgraded to the following:

K7-900
Abit KA7(100ATA) mobo
256 mb PC-133
Creative TNT 16meg
MX300 sound card

I setup up a dual boot system. I first setup win98 and the system would ALWAYS freeze hard on the intro of windows sound JUST after I installed the MX300 drivers and rebooted. I tried a different PCI slot/reseat and nothing. I also experienced the 1-3 seconds of winamp playing under Win2000 also.

At first I thought it was just drivers. But the problems I had with Win98 (which is what I used to run on my old BH6 Abit BX chipset mobo) had no problems.

SO I just diagnosed the problem as hardware incompatibility with the KX133 chipset of VIA's. I had a similar problem when I upgraded to my k62-300 with MVP3 chipset and my old Matrox Mystique just NOT working no matter what driver or anything I tried.

It is very interesting to see that you are running on a... is that ASUS a Intel chipset or VIA/3rd party? Sorry I really havn't been into the whole computer scene for a year or so.

But anyway after I removed the sound card windows98 works just fine as does Win2000. SO I guess I will have to stoop down to buying a cheap SBLive! card to get things working.

Mx300 and win2000 was nothing but hassles for me both with default drivers and the "final beta's" Today I gave in and ordered a soundblaster live. I hear they work well in 2000 and drivers are updated at least once in a while.

I can comment on the W2K and SBLive! front..I've got a SBLive Value that I bought about a year ago, and used it flawlessly in NT 4.0 and then upgraded to W2K Professional and have had NO problems..as much as the Diamond and Aureal sound cards are good..there just is no alternative to a industry standard..Regards

MX300 works flawlessly for me. Both the drivers that came w/win2k and the beta reference drivers worked. I like the reference cuz the bass sounds more full and it's more crisp.

Does anyone have a link to the Aureal beta Win2k drivers? I've tried looking but can't find them.

Thanks,
Tim
