Win2k Server taking up all IP's from DHCP server.

Hi All,

A question for you guys.

We're running an NT 4.0 box as a DHCP server on our small office network. We also have 3 Win2k Server boxes that are running as high-end number crunchers. As far as I can tell, the OS is set up identically on the Win2k server boxes. They are not providing any network services, as far as I can tell. i.e., they are not acting as DHCP, DNS, web, FTP, etc. servers. They merely run some optical modeling software and allow our engineers to log in remotely through Terminal Services.

The problem is the following. One of the Win2k servers routinely goes out onto the network and grabs all of the available leases from the DHCP server. The other Win2k servers are well-behaved and do not do this. When I check the leases on the NT 4.0 DHCP server, the leases obtained from the Win2k server have a different icon. This icon looks like a dialup icon, with a small telephone or something in front of a monitor.

We recently added a Linksys BEFW11S4 to our network, and the problem used to be that the computers connected wirelessly to this device would take all of the leases from the DHCP server. I eventually got that problem worked out, but I am perplexed to see the problem shift so that the Win2k server is now taking all of the leases. BTW, thanks to all who helped me work out this previous problem!

Perhaps it is a problem with the NT 4.0 server?

The server that is grabbing all the leases has Routing and Remote Access installed. The remote access portion of this service is for VPN and Dial in remote access. The service can be configured to grab a chunk of IP's from DHCP, and it holds them to assign to VPN or Dial in clients. By default I think it grabs ten leases at a time.

If you dont need RRAS installed I would suggest disabling it. You can then go into the DHCP snap in and delete the leases it ate up.
