I'm thinking about building a Win2K server, and I need some ideas/info. because I don't know anyone that has experience with it. (Everyone I know still has NT4).

First, what do I use as the O/S? There are at least 3 versions of Win2K and if I can use Win2K Professional instead of server or enterprise editions, it would be great (especially since this stuff is so darn expensive). I need to be able to run an FTP server and an email server on this machine. Does W2K have any built-in programs/support for these? Does anyone know of any good (cheap) email server software? I currently have a static IP via xDSL.

Also, where can I get a good price on the actual Win2K product (whichever version you recommend from above)? I have found CAL's for cheap, but I can't find the actual media for installation for a decent price. Please list some places and average prices.

Thanks alot,

Win2k Pro only allows 10 concurrent connections. The FTP server software comes with Win2k Server or better, not with Pro. There is no mail server included with any version of Windows. That's what Exchange Server is for. Don't know of any free (or even cheap) mail server for Win2k. Win2k Server is ~US$900, Advanced Server is ~US$3300, Exchange Server is ~US$1000, those prices are for 5 users, a lot depends on how many user licenses you need.

I would seriously consider Linux for what you want to do, since cost seems to be a big issue. All that stuff would then be available for to you for free.

Thanks for the great info.

I'd love 2 try Linux, but I don't think I have the time to learn how to use it and set it up.
