win2k server error backing up directory to backup drive

I am attempting to backup a "data & apps" directory from the 2nd partition "Drive D" on win2k server. I get a "file already exists error" about half way through the backup. The backup drive is newly formatted with nothing on it. I am selecting the whole directory & using copy / paste. When I just highlight the file I get the error on and use copy/ paste it transfers fine. What is going on? I want to setup automatic backup, but it doesn't look like that will work untill I figure this out.
Any help is appreciated.

When you say "backup" do you mean that you're using a software product to do a true backup of the selected drive to a file (on a different partition)? Or are you just trying to copy/paste an entire directory tree from one drive to another?

If the latter, use xcopy from the cmdline....it's scriptable, and much more effective.
