I have Win2K SP1 with IE 5.5 and there is this annoying little failure to get any javascripts running on web pages. It just shows a little broken picture icon. I had
IE 5.0 and it was doing the same thing so I upgraded to 5.5 hoping it would fix this, but of course it didn't.
ANyone here have some idea of what may be wrong? What I should check?
Thanks,

I have it on one machine where it works fine, but on this one it doesn't.
It's things like scrolling java banners and chat applets. I just can't get them to work at all.

Are you having problem running Java with IE, or running Java in web pages that you're serving? Thought I'd check....

Ladi, checked those places - they look normal.

Zach, trouble in displaying the things in IE. They work fine on my Win 98 box and my Win 2K pro box but not on the Win 2K server box.

It was this way on install of Win2K and updating to IE 5.1 didn't help and neither did updating to IE 5.5

I wrote "have you tried reinstalling IE 5.5" not "did you ever install IE 5.5". I understand that it came this way when 5.01 or whatever was on. My question was have you REINSTALLED it?

jeebus21,
I think what you are suggesting might be a bit dangerous with Win 2K server.
That would require uninstalling IE and then trying to reinstall it. If the system kept running it might be possible, but unless you have some method of doing this on Win2K server I am not aware of that you could guarantee wouldn't kill the OS it's just not worth it to see JS.
I am interested, but just a bit afraid of what BillG will do to my system should I be so brash as to want to uninstall his browser.

Reinstall, not go into the registry and remove every reference of IE or use the uninstall to go to previous versions of IE. Just go to windows udpate and choose to see previously installed software, click on IE 5.5 and choose to install it. It is quite simple and I have done it many many times at work (on Win2k Advanced and Regular Server) due to various language-pack problems and the servers run just fine. Truly, you should be just fine. I run advanced server at home and I did this twice now--once when my machine fell over half-way through installation and a second time when some crappy menu-bar software refused to go away. You should be just fine. :)

If that does not work, I do not know what to tell you because I have never seen it before. Good luck.

Oh, your comment on killing the OS...Win2k Server is substantially stout and I have installed all types of software and hammered it with client requests and other whatnot and it runs without a whisper of protest.

Thanks, that makes sense - normally I use the 'Install Software' control panel - which I would be very afraid of with IE. I'll try what you suggest and see what happens. Thanks again!

oops, clicked History instead of previously installed. Now I got the right one and reinstalled. I need to check and see if it is working now - just thought I'd edit and explain my goof.

When I go to view previously installed stuff I get a nice long list but no links. Just text.
It's interesting what came up for IE 5.5 though:

Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools - version 5,50,4522,1800 - failed install.

I had no idea it failed, and when I look at About IE it says it's 5.5
