Win2k Q's

i just installed win2k and got rid of Win98SE on my main athlon box. (gasp, never thought id dare do it!) Anyway, the reformat and install of win2k went perfect so far and im pretty impressed.

I have some tweaking Q's tho.. first of all where do i go to remove the item description when opening up a drive for example: My computer will have the whole left side taken up with "my computer" and info about it. I want this gone so i only see my drives etc.

Also when installing win2k, i entered a user name and a password but all i really wanted was ONE log-in which would be Admin login only.. where do i go to get rid of any users and only keep the admin login?

Any games that i have on my other "games" partition, will they all need to be reinstalled etc to work, or can i just create new shortcuts from their location on the desktop to work properly?

thats all for now. Hope all my games will work in win2k, thats really the only concern i have atm

I'm assuming you want to turn off View as a Web Page from your description. In Explorer choose Tools->Folder Options in the menu at the top. Select Windows Classic.

You shouldn't login as Administrator for normal tasks, create a power user or user account for that. Use Administrator only when necessary. You can use TweakUI to automatically login on bootup.

Unless they are a simple executible, yes, you must reinstall. They will have entries that must be placed in the registry.

Software and Hardware Compatibility

ok i just got done with d/l all the win2k updates and such.. wow i had no idea there was so much to d/l, thank god for cable!

Im noticing how diffrent win2k is from good ol 98se and i was surprised to see there is no scandisk function under system tools? did i not install it or does win2k take care of scandisk automaticly?

When exactly would i "need" to log in as Admin vs logging in as User? Both have totally diffrent desktops etc and isnt it easier just to use admin cuz re-logging just to beable to install a program or format a partition is kinda tedious if logged in as User. (I did create both accounts, one admin and one User)

Would i need to install w98se incase a game isnt supported in win2k or..? Whats the minimum C:\ partition i should have for win2k? I have currently 4GB total on C:\ with 2.9GB free after all the patches and win2k program installed. (im only installing OS related items on C:\ .. all the other crap goes on the other partitions) Is 4GB enough?

Thanks for your good responses and im learning win2k pretty quickly thanks to all your suggestions... practice makes perfect

Star > Settings > Control Panel > Users & Passwords

You can also uncheck "Users must enter a username and password..." for automatic login or under the Advanced tag, uncheck "Require users to press ctrl+alt+del..."

You can run scan disk manually by going to my computer. Right clicking on the drive, then properties. Then under one of the tabs (I can't remeber - in linux right now) is the scan disk button. Or you can just leave it alone and when you reboot w/ out shutting down properly, win 2k will do scan disk by itself.

If it's needs to be run W2K will run it when you boot. However due to the stability of W2K, if you leave it up for long periods of time, it may not be a bad idea to check it once in a while on your own. Are you using NTFS or FAT32??? NTFS is much more resistant to problems of this nature.

Once again this depends on if you're running NTFS or FAT32. If running NTFS you would have to use the administrator account to change file and directory permissions and access certain OS functions and settings. Running as a poer user or user will prevent you from accidently fudging up the OS while you're learning if you're new to it. If you're using NTFS running under another account without administrator rights will help protect you from many viruses.

You can also hold down shift and right-click on a shortcut or executible and select runas. This way you can run something as an Administrator but not have to log off and back on again.

Maybe, you might be able to use compatibility mode. Search for apcompat.exe on your installation CD.

That's not real easy to answer, it depends. Look here for a discussion on this.
