Win2k Pro vs. Win2k Server

Server has additional stuff to help you run a server.

Other than that they are the same to my knowledge.

Unless you plan on running a server, I would go with Professional.

Windows 2000 Pro is all you'll ever need for normal desktop use. Windows 2000 Server has some extra programs for....surprise...servers! 😉

Win2k Server has a lot of added capability to function as a domain controller with Active Directory. It has virtually no added value for someone with a single home system or even a home network that uses workgroups, unless you're studying to become Microsoft certified.

If you're trying to set up an enterprise server with DNS, you'll find it's great.

Server can be a domain controller
Server can utilize more memory (4G as opposed to 2G for Pro IIRC)
Server can utilize more CPUs (4 as opposed to 2 for Pro IIRC)
Server supports more than 10 concurrent SMB clients

If you're trying to set up an enterprise server with DNS, you'll find it's great.

For somethings it's good, like Exchange. But for something as critical as DNS or DHCP, I'd prefer a unix box running BIND or dhcpd. They're much more reliable and much less maintenance.
