Win2k Pro or WinXP Pro?

I got a dual CPU set-up down in the FS/FT forum, and want to get it set-up this week. I have either WinXP Pro or Win2k Pro to stick in it. Opinions?

I do still run some older components:
MX-300 soundcard
Netgear NIC
Aopen DVD drive
TDK 12x CD burner


Mostly I do some web surfing...duh 🙂
Gaming...flight sims, FPS etc
Little photo editing
CD-Burning
Usual stuff
I do turn off my system when its not in use, no need to have it run 20 hours a day doing nothing. That makes me think that the quicker boot times of XP Pro might be for me.

I do remember people having issues with games and stuff on Win2k just dont know if most issues got worked out or not.

Go ahead and yell Linux if you must 🙂 then tell me which of the Windows you would use if someone held a gun to your head 🙂

You just want me for my dual CPUs...stay away, they are mine.......all mine 🙂

I actually tried the RC-5 deal a while back, and could never get it to work right, I gave up.
 
I don't have experience with 2K, but since XP is basically upgraded 2K, I'd think you would want to try it.

I do a lot of gaming and CD burning and have had not had to give up any application from the 98SE set-up

I was on before.


note: From reading posts, it sounds like 2K needs a fair amount of TLC to run correctly (I am always reading

about system file modificaitons, ect.) I haven't had to do that in XP. Everything I wanted to disable or tweak

was available as a normal option displayed on one window or another (although, it was a bit of a hunt to find

them sometimes.) Now that I am used to the GUI, I can say I like XP.
 
I am still running Win98SE 😱

If it isnt broken......

And if it supported SMP, I would probably still keep it.
 
I am using win 2k pro, most things run well except a few old old games... i tried to upgrade to winxp pro but it always crashed when logging into it for the first time so here i am in win 2k forever haha
 
win2k is fine, it will work on fat 32 just like xp. that being said i use win2k cuz it works with my old suprasonic 2 modem and xp doesn't oddly enough😛 xp's probably better but you'll have to go around turning off most of the extra junk that just gets in the way😛 as for the difference between 98 and nt based? oh my, if you multitask nt based os will spoil you. win98 heavy multitasking = fear of crash.

if you do run a distrib computing the intel cancer one is good🙂

I use 2K on my main machine at the moment, I have XP on my secondary machine - not a whole lot of difference between the two of them.
 
I`ve one PC with Win98 and my other with WinXP Pro and really like the stability and the fact that most of my games run fine with XP,so I would say try WinXP Pro, I was expecting to have problems etc but it turned out for me to be rock stable with no problems period.

XP is more than just a service pack for Win2k. Aside from "Luna" (new GUI) there is a lot going on in the background. I found it to be extemely stable, have had no (read zero) problems with compatibility with Win2k or Win9x programs, and it is fast....really fast compared to Win2k. Granted, my applications run slightly slower than on 9x.....but for the stability I will give up a little. Compared to Win2k this OS blazes.
 
XP... its the newest release. Why would you buy an OS that wasn't the latest? your gonna have to buy it eventually.
 
I say stick with win98se. I went to XP and also to 2k and just didn't like them. Too much bloat in XP, and performance was definitely not close to 98se. Plus with 98se you don't have to tweak options just to get programs to run. 98se is fine for websurfing and lightgaming, so dont switch.

Well if I dont switch I am going to be wasting a lot of money getting this SMP set-up, and running Win98SE on it. 😉
 
I currently have WIN2K Pro set up on my workstations and I like it.However I have XP set up for now on my dual athlon rig and am impressed with it,particularly the networking features.
