Win2k Pro Network cable unplugged

I recently set up my old box because my main box crashed and burned on me. I'm using Win2k. I get the "Network Cable Unplugged" icon in my system tray every few minutes. I don't think there is a problem with the cable. I've used this cable on other machines before. Basically I get the icon, and my computer freezes for a few seconds until it goes away. Of course, my internet connection is severed for those few seconds too. Does anyone know what this could be? Please let me know. Thanks in advance for any answers you might have.

perhaps you might want to try reseating the nic. Or even moving it to a different slot. it might not like sharing....
