After going successfully through the steps of os loader and drive formatting etc. it properly reboots into windows setup mode. Its all fine for now. Then, as you know, the setup tells you to wait while it installs the necessary keyboard, mouse etc. drivers. Then, when it tells that "it would analyse the system, it could take several minutes and the monitor may flicker...", the progress bar gets to the point, about midway, where it always flickers as MS promissed, but in my case it goes to black screen with the cursor blinking in the top left corner and THREE ROWS of apostrophies are drawn across the screen in the bottom half. Please help!!! I need this comp working ASAP :( BTW, Win98se installs without a problem:|, but i can't have it on this comp. I tried several times already, and it always kills setup at exactly the same point.
Thanks ahead of time for your help, it's greatly appreciated!

There should be a safe recovery where it restarts and skips that step, if not there is a key command to do to skip the hardware detection, Anyone else know it I cant remember it at this time.

Yes, of course, I can start it with F8, and launch in safe mode, but I am just installing the thing for the first time on this box, if skip it now, I'm going to be a lot of sh.... when the whole thing finally installed, and I load it in the normal mode. I would, rather, want to know what da hell is wrong!? As far as I know, it should be checking the graph card at the point of flickerring, it's an ATI Rage 128 with 16 or 32 M. As I said before, no problem with win98se install or usage. Could this card be incompatible with Win2k?! Is this the case?!

I have this thread started in Technical support, so please follow the linky, so we do not clubber the forums with multiple discussions of the same subject. the only reason why I have created this thread is that I need the solution ASAP and I could use all the help I can get! Thanks a lot for giving me a hand and for not posting in this thread! I hope AT moderators will give just a bit of leaway and not lock this one for now. Please:eek:

upgrade your bios. format everything and go a clean install again.
Short of bios, it is all new! It's a brang new, freshly formatted by the os loader hd. As clean of an install as you can get:)
I'll check out ASUS now to see if there are any relevant bios updates. We'll see...

I had a similar issue, and after a lot of hair pulling, it came down to the cdrom I was using was choking the install. Replaced it and it worked fine. It's something to try.

You might also try to remove or disable every device but the video card. Maybe there is some conflict it can't resolve in the install.

By CDROM, do you mean the win2k cd or the actual drive?
On the subject of cards, I've dealt with windows since 1.0 (or, just windows), so, all the cards went out of the box before I even began:)
Why the hell win98se has no problem whatsoever?!?!
BTW, before my last try I had upgraded the bios to the most current, as per previous suggestion. NO DICE!!!:|
Any other ideas outhere? Please:eek:

Well, I can at least rule out the 'Video card being the problem' theory... Just used a ATI Rage fer my uncles WIn2k Box.

So, do any of you wizguys outhere have any ideas on what else it might be checking when the screen is supposed to flicker? Some other controllers besides graphics could be involved? I have removed the cards, as i said before, but could it be some sort of jumper setting on the motherboard that enables some functionality that is choking win2k information gatherer routine and does not affect the 98se?
Any input, no matter how wild, is great:) It is windows, after all;)

P.S. Just in case: the motherboard is ASUS K7V. Maybe anyone heard anything on the subject of this board and Win2k combined?
