win2k password problem

here's the problem: when win2k loads, it asks for a username and password. i had this computer a couple months and it never popped up before. i never 'configured' a password and never needed one before today.

here's what i did to create the problem: i had some trouble setting up a small network (2 computers) so i started fidgetting with settings. i did this:

control panel->system->network ID->create business network/connection without domain.

after doing this, i started to get that password thing at startup and cant get around it. basically, it feels like i'm locked out of my computer.

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

strange you never had to have a password before... hwen you install windows 2000, it REQUIRES you have an administrator account and password.

reformat?

its a gateway system. when it first started up i did have to pout in a username, but i left the password space blank so it never showed up again. i should have said this earlier.

IIRC, Win2k REQUIRES an administrator password on install and won't proceed without one. Dunno about the OEM version tho.

win2k doesnt need a password, it just asks you for one on install. i have a coperate copy and i never use a password for win2k admin account. its just a personal box so im not worried, i would try and just sign in as admin with no password.

good luck

I have the corporate copy too and it always asks for a password for a local user admin acct, doesn't ask for a cd key or anything but it needs a password, mine anyway. If it really came preloaded with win2k from gateway and no password that you can find surely call them and ask, maybe they have something generic.

Make sure you check the options to see that you are trying to use the local user profiles. W2K always requires a user account to be selected to logon, Though you can set it to default to a particular account if you want. Administrator is a default account on all W2K macines, so I would try logging in as administrator and try different passwords like nothing or the name you entered when you first set it up. Also try logging on with the username you think you entered before.

Check the options box at the log in screen and make sure you are logging into the local machine and not the network you just created.
