Win2K or Win98SE? *Update: Reformat, or Install Win2k over Win98se?

ndee

Lifer
That's my question. It's the computer of my parents. They never play games, just me an my brother occasionaly. That's the Rig:

Classic Athlon 500 (Slot A)
128MB RAM
15GB 75GXP IBM Harddisk
MSI K7 Pro Motherboard
ATI Xpert 2000 32MB Ram

Is it worth? Would the performance be better in Win2K?

Thanx for any input.

Will there be any performance increase? I guess so, but that's my opinion.... I wanna hear the xperts 😉

[Edit]OK, I decided, I wanna upgrade to Windows 2000 Pro. Can I just install it over Win98se, or shall I reformat?[/Edit]

Performance will be similar, except for games, which will run a tad slower.

Again, they key with Win2K is stability. If they aren't playing many games on it, Win2K hands down.

You should not install Win2k *over* 98, but you can install it next to 98. What I mean by that is, install Win2k, put it in a different directory (it likes to use winnt, that will be fine). Then, Win2k's boot manager will allow you to choose whether you want to boot into 2k or 98. So you can have the best of both worlds. 🙂

I did this for my parents because the little kids like to play crappy old games that only work on 9x.

Sir Fredrick:
I think my parents get confused when they see the boot manager 😉 Well....., to dual boot or not......., what's the advantage of win98se actually? Nothing, if they don't play games. And the games that my brother and me will play will also work in Win2K I guess. Ahh...... I will go with dual boot.... hehe *confused*

**Most** games will run with Win2k, but there are a few that have occasional problems. I haven't personally run into any yet. Win2k is more stable, but you will need more RAM for it than in Win98. 128 should be enough, but adding another 64 or 128 wouldn't hurt either. RAM is cheep.

I'll be going the same route soon - Win98SE to Win2k. After some research I decided to upgrade first - that way you have a chance to get your drivers ready - while installing W2k - it will tell you what h/w and s/w is not compatible with W2k first - and you have to get W2k drivers for it.
Then - if everything works fine - you could format and re-install W2k clean and you would already know what drivers you'd need ahead of time.
This way if you have problems with W2k you have still something to go back to without re-installing W98.

Reformat and clean install will give you the least probelms. Just make sure you have a disk, cd, or zip disk ready with all the necessary drivers for w2k.

blstriker, that would be true if he was installing 9x that would try to update all his apps and drivers and everything automatically, and copy over his old install. Win2k will not do that.
One advantage of dual booting to 2k is that if you discover you need newer drivers for something and can't connect to the internet in 2k, you can still go back to 9x, get online and get the stuff you need. Or, if you find out something isn't compatible with Win2k, you can still use your system while you're in the process of replacing it. 🙂

It's not just games that may have problems with Win2, my parents had some weird reference software that they bought, it would only work in 95. They have since recieved an update for it, but for about 2 months they had to use it in 95. Personally it would drive me nuts having to reboot from one OS to the other and I would have just ditched the software, but my parents don't mind.

I will be installing win98 SE and Win2K this weekend. I am using 98 right now, but not SE.

Anything I should be aware of? I'd rather not reformat.

Windows 2000 upgrades Very good. I wouldn't worry about it.

What's cool is, you insert the CD and tell it "YEs" to do the upgrade, and walk away... come back in about an hour and you're computer is sitting waiting for you all done 🙂

<<You should not install Win2k *over* 98, but you can install it next to 98>>

False. Windows 2000 does the best upgrade in Windows history. I've done plenty and they All are still running Great.
