Win2K on a dual CPU system

I'm considering building one of these on a dual P2 266 to replace my deceased Celeron 366@523.
This machine has been used primarily for cracking/gaming and will use a V3 3000 video.
The question that I have is this; when being used for gaming (Half Life, UT, etc) Will both CPUs be in use by the game, or will one continue to crack?
If the games typically use one CPU, are there any games/versions/updates that will allow the use of both?

viztech I am not a w2K expert but I have used it in a dual system

both CPUs will continue to crack, #1 at a reduced rate and #2 at the normal rate

Q3 is one that will use both CPUs but you have to force it.. the info is in the read me.. by now there are probably more I'm sure

I had W2K running on my BP6(2xC-533) and it is nice for playing games

Hi Viz,

I think this is going to depend on the game more than anything else. I'm pretty certain that Quake 3 is SMP capable so it will grab most of the CPU time leaving only the leftovers for cracking. The other games you mentioned I'm not sure about but if they are not SMP aware then the other CPU should be running 100% crack.

Better still, just run the dual for cracking and buy another machine for gaming. I know at least 2 other people that have been bitten by the RC5 bug and done this. 😀

I play Both Half Life TFC an Unreal Tournament on my Dual p3-600, overall my games did get faster, not because the games support 2 cpu's but because Win2k had the 2nd CPU to use while the games used the first one........

Also if your are going to use win2k on a dual system, I really recomend having atleast 256MB of ram, that will keep the OS and the ghames happy....

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo........................

viztech, I don't play any games with my dual P3 560's. Just for cracking! Take Dougal's advice and use a different machine for games. Your keyrate will thank you!!! 😀

SpaceWalker is correct. I did some testing under NT4 with UT. When you fire up a game, the OS is smart enough to give the game 100% of #1 CPU and switch OS background stuff to #2. I have about a 10fps increase in speed when using dual CPU's under NT. Although Quake 3 is SMP compatible. I have yet to get it to work under any OS, but I do think that it is related to the Voodoo3 video cards not supporting SMP in the drivers.

So when your running a game, it will likely use 100% of #1, and the OS will likely use 5-10% of #2 with the rest left to crack.

Iv'e been running a dual system for awhile now and let RC5 run all the time. Quake 3 is the only SMP game I know of and it requires a special command line. I can't really see that much of a difference.

I'm tracking with everything written above, even though most programs arent written for SMP, the whole system benifits from the 2 CPU's.

I'm about to buid an Athlon board for gaming and use this dual set-up for my in home server.

Fandu, Voodoo cards, all of them do not support SMP, at least in their drivers...

Geforce cards do support SMP for a fact, but the feature seems to be broken right now.. An issue with the drivers..

Bottom line- It will work about the same as a single P2 300, and will crack like a single P2 233 when gaming.
