ok. this is my first time on an NT/NT based system. this is for my home network (the other 3 of which are running 98se). The workgroups are all set to the same. i have set up user priviledges for each of the other units corresponding w/ the login name they use to logon to their respective machines. if i choose "my network places" and click my way to the name of my workgroup (or click "computers near me") sometimes i see the other computers on my network and sometimes it only shows mine. when i am able to see the other machines; the other machines can see me as well. but when i only see my machine in the workgroup; they see all the machines w/ the exception of mine. once again i am not familiar w/ the network settings and user priviledges and so forth assoc. w/ an NT based OS. i would appreciate any help anyone could offer. even a url to a site with useful info would be great too.

also i forgot. i have a cable modem which runs thru a router and then into my hub. all computers always have access to the cable modem connection. even when a my computer says there is no-one else in my workgroup or the other machines are unable to see me. just thought this might make help a bit easier.

tcp/ip will be for the internet, and you say that works fine. Unbind file and printer sharing from tcp/ip. Netbeui will be for LAN - on all computers.

possibly something to do with the browser service on your computer not having enuff time to update its local copy / refresh it. If your pc was turned off and the others were up and running, they'd build their own browse lists, which did not include ur pc. When you switch your pc on, it normally takes about 15 minutes for the browse service to refresh its local copy / retrieve a copy of the brose list from other browse masters. Is that the scenario with your problem?.. What happens if your machine stays on for a while - does network neighbourhood work then?.

Also, im assuming you have no wins servers running on your little workgroup. your 98 pc's are running netbuei to resolve ip to host names, but ur 2000 machine isnt - you could work around this by specifying ip addressess and host names in your lmhosts file on the 2000 pc. For help on doing this check out www.ntfaq.com and search for lmhosts. there should be something there to help.

ok.. now windows sees the computers on my network. but when i double clik on a specific machine it takes like 20-30 seconds to load up the shared content....

NetBEUI has nothing to do with anything. Forget that, multiple protocols only has the potential to slow down communications. It won't speed anything up.

Steelo is on track with this being a browsing issue. MS browsing service is terribly inefficient, with or without a WINS server to assist.

For your small network, this really only affects the ability of things like Explorer enumerating a list of computers on the network and their shares. Whether or not the machines are visible in Explorer (network neighborhood... it's the same thing), the machines are still able to communicate with each other. This browsing primarily affects NetBios name resolution.

If you are hell bent on using Explorer to browse your network, I would suggest using LMHOSTS files on all machines. Make sure that on all machines, you have the "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" option checked.

Try this:

1. Open Network Neighborhood (or My Network Places) window, open your workgroup.

2. Ping every PC's IP address from your PC. Note the latency to each host.

3. Refresh (F5) your network neighborhood window. Any change?

Repeat on each PC.

Also check the event log on your server. It might show some master browser "stand-offs" or something.

If you do a search for the computer names of the other hosts, does it find that host and allow you to look at its shares?

i am not even able to look into my workgroup "home". it says:

however i can ping each computer on my network successfully with pings all below 10ms.


the exact stats for one machine where.

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.3:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

i have a lot of errors that look like this:

Well I'm no expert, but I'll continue trying to help until someone more knowledgeable comes along.

The message you just posted was normal output for when you turned off the master browser PC.

So you can't even open the workgroup? Weird. Each PC has a unique name, right? Check that.

Turn all the PC's off and bring up your win2k box by itself. Can you open Home? If not, change to a different workgroup (make up a name) and then switch back to home. What happens now?

i don't have the netbeui protocol installed on any of the machines. the only protocol i have installed is tcp/ip i took out all the others.
