win2k networking problem - FIXED THANKS!

i have a desktop and notebook both running win2k pro sp2
neither computer can see each other in network neighborhood ( i want to share files)
i get the following error message on both machines
"workgroup is not accessible
the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

networked with ethernet and linksys router
both see the internet fine and also can ping each other
both have the same workgroup name 'WORKGROUP'
both have tcp/ip and netbios isntalled

what am i doing wrong?
please help

Actually, that will likely have zero affect. In fact, installing NetBEUI can be a great help in clearing up name resolution issues (Network Neighborhood connectivity) If you do choose to just use IP, then making a simple hosts file can help as well. Can you find the computer using the find feature, using the computer name (NetBIOS name)? Or even find the computer using the IP and "find computer"
 
A hosts file is a simple text file used to help resolve IP's to NetBIOS names. Its very curious that you can ping but not find the other computer via the IP name. In that case, I am not sure a hosts file would help. Seems like something is up there. You can do a search for hosts and view the hosts.sam, a sample file with a decent read me in it.
 
johngute, make sure both of your Win2K machines have the same subnet mask and have IP addresses that are on the same subnet. For example, one computer with a IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the other computer with an IP address of 192.168.0.2. Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. These are private IP addresses that I used just as an example.
 
Also check and make sure your Computer Browsing services are turned on (Workstation/Server).

I know, they're on by default, but I've been on "reduce active services!" sprees before and turned them off.

Do you use username and password to login on both machines? And are username/password the same on both machines or not?
