i'm trying to network 2 win2k comps together so they can share large image files. for this, i got a cheap linksys 10/100 5 port hub. after, i connected the two computers' nics with the hub and started the two up but the computers dont seem to 'see' each other. both computers have the lan icon on the win 2k startup tray that say they are connected and have sent 'packets,' but the two arent receiving any. both are in a workgroup i entitled 'workgroup' so there's be no mix up.

can someone tell me if i'm missing anything or what the problem might be? i have no clue, but i bet its something simple...thanks.

Have you created user accounts on each of the machines for the other machine? In other words, if one machine is named "Tom" and the other "Dick", there needs to be an account on Tom for Dick, and vice-versa.

On these two computers, are they Servers or just Professional?
Try assigning IPs to both machines and try to ping them.

What type of protocols are you using on them?

Superkeith,

You can just make them up especially if you are just connecting them to each other. Once you have static IPs in each computer, try to ping one from the other and vice versa. If this works then you know that your cables, nics and hub are working.

The last step is to enable the OS. There are a couple of things you need to do for this.

First enable file and print sharing. To do this open Start->Settings->Network and Dial Up Connections->Local Area Connection. Click the install button and add a Service. You should be able to find file and print sharing from there.

Second make sure that you share the drive or folder you will want to access from the other machine. To do this, open explorer and right click on the file/directory/drive that you want to share. Choose the sharing... option and follow the instructions.

I think you can avoid having to create user access rights by giving full access to everyone when creating the share. Obviously this is not the most secure, but it is the easiest :)

Hope this helps.
