WIN2K + Maxtor = Weird...

I'm running Win2K SP2 (French) on a MSI K7T turbo Mobo (Bios 2.5)
w/ Tbird@1.4 Ghz. I've got two hard drives on the primary controller,
master is IBM 40 GB and slave is Maxtor 20 GB.

POST reports that Maxtor on primary is ATA100, but Win2K refuses
to use UDMA for this drive. It's always in PIO mode (The IBM
master is in UDMA)

Of course, I'm running SP2. I tried various VIA "4in1" patch,
including the last one (4.32) but the drive is still in PIO,
consumming CPU time voraciously :)

This is not a hardware issue, because my system is dual-booted
and the Maxtor runs at full speed under 98SE.

Is there a weird issue with Maxtor drives on Win2K ? MS Knowledge
base says nothing about that...

Strange...I have 2 DiamondMax+60 30GB Maxtors and they work fine in win2k at ata100. So I don't think it is a win2k, maxtor compatibility issue.

I assume you tried to change the controller settings in hardware device manager?

Yep, flyers. I tried various tweaks in device manager, including
switching the IBM to PIO mode. Useless for now.

I saw a discussion on Viahardware, stating that VIA IDE busmaster
was not automaticaly installed with the 4in1 patch... seems unlikely
for me, from what I saw in the installer.

I also have the same problem with my maxtor ( I think the model is 40+ 30 gig 7200) I have it as the bootup drive with win2k) When I was trying to get ata66 working, it just refused to be in UDMA mode in win2k. I tried a lot of different things, including installing via 4-1, the via busmaster drivers and making sure that I didn't overlook anything. My IBM drive seemed to work fine in udma ata66, but the maxtor just kept on using PIO mode. It was hidiously slow, so I just switched back to ata33 to save me the headaches.
