Win2k LAN - Can ping, but can't browse PC's on LAN

I have a small 6 PC LAN on an 8-port switch with a Cisco 675 router (DHCP). I've always been able to browse using windows explorer to move files around. I haven't had to in awhile, so I don't know when the problem started...but I can't even see the Win2k PC's on my LAN now from any of the PC's (I can see the Win98SE one). I can ping them, but I can't see them in Windows Explorer.

I'm thinking one of the windows updates got me because that's all that changed, I keep all the PC's updated with all critical updates. Anyone know which one is the culprit?

EDIT - They also don't show in "Computers Near Me" nor in "Entire Network">"My Workgroup Name".

There are numerous amount of sharing setting on each computer. Go over them and find which one is out of order.

I have had the same problem when I installed ZoneAlarm... took me awhile to relize the problem.

Thanks, but I already had that all setup. I know how to setup a peer to peer LAN. It's been running fine for a couple years. Everyone logs in as adminstrator automatically on my LAN. Everything WAS working fine, like I said. I really believe it's a windows update that got me.

Im having the same problem but with XP rigs (one wireless, the others wired)

I am able to navigate the wired rigs just fine (and can ping the wireless laptop), but i cant browse the laptop from the wired rigs (nor vice versa)

load netbeui and wash all your browsing troubles away.



Its a protocol under you network adapter. Load is on all machines and move it to the top of the binding order.

ahhh...I believe I need TCP/IP because they all have internet access and I'm using NAT. Guess I can run both protocols, but I'd rather find the problem because it's buggin me, lol.

Could be that Windows Update caused the problem.

But your current situation is in the Network settings not in Windows Update.

You have three choices.

1. The Spidey way. I.e. load NetBEUI and share without IPs.

This page is for WinXP, it very similar in Win2000.

Set NetBEUI as the Default Sharing Protocol in WinXP.

2. Go over the settings of the sharing.

If they look OK uninstall the Network Settings and reinstall and configure.

3. Perform a voodoo ceremony to get rid of the spell.

BTW. I would not use Auto Update or and Wizards in any of my Windows Computers. As much as Microsoft tries, they can not fit the auto system to perform the best for your specific settings. This is especially true when the computers are handled by people who like to tweak and improve their systems. Repeated use of the ?Auto System? eventually trashes parts of any settings.

Can you access the machines via machine names? ie if you go to Start Run \\<machine name>\<share name>
can you access the machines that way?

use netbeui. windows likes netbeui. u can use tcp ip too.

Thanks everyone, I gave up and installed netbui protocol. Everything is working fine again.
