Win2K + KT7-RAID ?

Hi ...

I've been a proud owner of a Abit BH6/Celeron 450A since Jan. 99 ... And I think it's time to upgrade.

I've got a dual-boot configuration with Win2K and WinME

I'm going to buy the new ABIT KT7-RAID board and a Thunderbird 900 .. well anyway, the Abit has a Highpoint UDMA/100 IDE controller and I was wondering what would happen after I swap the mobo/CPU ... I know that in order to use WinNT on a Abit BP6, which also had a highpoint controller, you had to supply a driver during the installation process.

Will my Win2K autodetect this new controller, or do I have to install again ?

You'll need to install again. There is however a major difference between the BP6 version of the HP & the KT-7 version. The KT-7 is designed for RAID only, if you're only going to use one drive you jsut install it on the normal IDE channel.

The MB manual tells how do do the install on the RAID, it's similar to the BP6 - make disk, boot, supply driver, continue...blah...blah.

So ... If I do not plan on using Raid ... I just connect my drive to the regular IDE channel ... that means I won't have to re-install, right?

Well, sort of. You'll still net to install the HP drivers unless you want to see the "Unkown device" in device manager (won't matter if you don't use them, but yes, they are strictly used for RAID. The really odd thing aout the KT-7 & Win2K is that if you use ACPI damn near everything shares IRQ 11 - very strange!

I always do a clean install with a MB change, but you can get by without it. Two of the best KT-7 sites I've found are:

Paul's KT-7 FAQ

and

KT7.ORG

I tried to pull the same thing to be greeted by- no boot sector found messages.
You must reinstall again.
Its worth it
