Win2K Keycode

I'm formatting and reinstalling Win2k Pro for a buddy, but I need his keycode. I can't find it in the registry, do any of you know where it is?

Thanks

Written on a piece of paper or the manual that came with his Win2k CD.

If he's lost that I believe you can get a new key through MS customer service somehow, but I've never had to do it.

Unless it's a corporate premier version then the code should be somewhere in the registry, don't remember where though.

The product ID is in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version. Sorry if that isn't what you were looking for.

EDIT:Duh... im an idiot... i have no idea where you would find that... but if you actually own the software, is it illegal to get it off a warez site?

I've searched long and hard in the registry to try and find that productkey, and it is not in the registry, to the best of my knowledge.

There is no way to get the Key code that would be n the back of the CD case. When you install Windows 2000, SETUP translates the 25 digit code to a numerical value that is put in the registry, but never the key on the back of the CD case. I would call Microsoft and try to get one from them. Good luck though.

Oh well, he can just wait until I can get ahold of him and use his. He needs a lot of help, much of it coming from MS, so I want him to have the real key code there.

Thanks anyways guys

Try this

Regedit
Select: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Select: Software
Select: Microsoft
Select: Windows
Select: Current Version
Double click - ProductId

Hope this helps

I think you will find that is the path to the registy key for windows 98 only. I cant find it in 2000 either.
