Win2k ICS problem

I just moved back home from college and now I'm stuck and dialup - if that's not bad enough I'm gonna have to share it with my family (ack!!) 🙁

So, I've got my Win2k Pro and my family's Win98SE box hooked up together via a hub and they can see eachother and transfer files just fine. However, I can't get Internet Connection Sharing to work. I don't have ICS installed on the Win98 box. I setup IE on the Win98 comp to connect to the net via a LAN.

Win2k IP: 192.168.0.1
Win98 IP: 192.168.0.2
Both under Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

I didn't put anything in for a DNS server - it's blank. Still getting to know my way around Win2k and am a newbie to Networking (obviously!) 😛 If I left something out just let me know, TIA 🙂
 
Which machine has the modem? That's the machine that you have to set up with ICS. I'd suggest using the win2k box to run it, so you might have to move the modem there. If you already have a modem and a nic in your box, go to my network neighborhood, double click on the modem connection, and you'll see a second tab at top- sharing. That's where you configure ICS in win2k.
 
The modem is in the Win2k box and I've got ICS turned on. On-Demand Dialing turned on as well. The Win98 comp doesn't seem to detect that the Win2k box is connected to the internet though. 😕
 
If you don't you need to set the gateway of the 98 machine to the IP of the 2k machine (192.168.0.1). You also might have to enter a dns server in the 98 machine.
 
I set the 98 machine gateway to 192.168.0.1 and restarted and nothing happened...doesn't detect the internet connection.
What numbers do I put in for a DNS server?
 
connect your win2k machine to the internet. Then go to start/run and type "cmd". At the command prompt type "ipconfig /all" here and you will find your dns server.

It doesn't sound like that is your problem though. You shouldn't need the dns info to get the 2k machine to dial. I would suggest removing ICS and reinstalling it.
 
When I setup ICS, I do hardly any configuring at all on the client computers. I tell it to obtain everything automatically, it will find the default gateway, dns, and give you your ip address. I suggest you do it this way, if something is wrong and it's not getting these things, then your ICS machine is not assigning it properly.

FYI, I'm running Win98SE for my ICS machine, and a win2k machine for the client. The Win2K machine is set to get everything automatically. Default gateway, DHCP server, and DNS server all get assigned 192.168.0.1, the ip of the 98SE machine.
 
While on line, on the 98 machine, go to a command prompt and try pinging 127.0.0.1, then 192.168.0.1, then the ip of your isp (which you can get from your win2k machine). Let us know at what point you don't get a successful ping.
 
pinging 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.0.1 went fine. I couldn't ping my IP of the ISP though...I got "Destination Host Unreachable" and I'm positive it was the correct IP#.

Something I did find a bit strange was that in the Device Manager there is an Unknown Device listed under Network Adapters which I can't delete. It's got the red X on it but I still can't delete it. My NIC is still listed there and is properly installed though. Not sure if that's useful info or not 🙂

I always have to put my server ip (192.168.0.1) in for the gateway, and for the primary dns on the client machine...that works for me.
 
You're not running a router by any chance are you? The fact that you can ping your win2k machines says that tcp/ip is working, and the problem sounds like it is with the win2k machine. Go to my network neighborhood, right click on your internet connection, go to the sharing tab, make sure you have ICS checked, click on settings, make sure you have pop3 and smpt checked. Check your protocols, you should have client for microsoft networks, tcp/ip, and on mine I have Network monitor driver loaded ( not sure if you need it, don't remember why I have it anymore, or if it's needed 🙂 ), and of course your modem.

Sigh, I have it loaded so I can monitor my network--Doh! (brain fart😱)🙂
 
Well...I reinstalled all the Network Adapters on the Win98 machine and now ICS finally works (w00t!) 🙂

One thing I have noticed is that when I'm trying to access the Win98 harddrive from my Win2k computer it takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute for the harddrive to appear. Once it appears I can go through it without any lag or pauses of any sort. I don't think this is due to ICS working cause I slightly remember having this problem before.

Glad to hear you got it up and running. As for the searching problem, I just read something somewhere about that, it was something to do with the fact that win2k is checking scheduled tasks first, and that you had to do something in control panel to stop it. If I remember where I saw the article, I'll let you know...
 
If you could find that article that'd be great! I've just spent the last hour or so looking for some type of fix but haven't come up with anything yet.
 
A search on the forum here only turned up this post but it didn't solve my problem 🙁 Whenever I open My Network Places and double click on Computers Near Me it still takes about 15 seconds for both computers to show up. Once they show up I can browse them without any pauses at all.
 
Hey, I'm having the same problem with the slow network browsing. It's strange that it's only slow when you're on the Win2k box. When you browse with a 98se box it goes fast. If y'all find any info on this please post it here. Thanks
