I found this on making a Emergency Repair Disk: Repair Disk

Steps Performed by the Emergency Repair Disk

The following steps are performed by the Emergency Repair Disk:

Runs CHKDSK on the partition containing Windows NT system files. On Intel x86 machines, also runs CHKDSK on the system partition (this is optional and must be enabled manually).

Verifies that each file in the installation is good, through a checksum algorithm. If files are missing or corrupt they are restored from the installation disks.

Replaces the default system and security (SAM) Registry hives, subject to user confirmation.

Reinstalls Boot Loader (that is, the boot sector, BOOT.INI, NTLDR, etc.)

right click my computer->properties->advanced->performance options->then virtual memory. Try tooling around in there. I reckon it'll get rebuilt upon reboot.

loogie: i cant even get windows to completely load up..it asks for Username and password, i put it in, and then the window about the pagefile pops up and i hit okay....everything in the back is blank, windows does not load up...after i hit okay, it just says SAVING SETTINGS and logs me out and the username/pw box comes back up...and keeps doing that over and over

are you logging on as administrator? if not, logon as administrator(assuming you remember the administrator password)

right click on my computer, then properties. click on the user profiles tab.

delete the trouble profile linked to the id that's giving you a hard time to logon. recreate that prifile by logging to that id again after you logoff. that should do it.

but before you try this, try to delete the pagefile.sys from the c:\ drive. if this has been done already, just log on as the administrator.

if all else fails, pop in the w2k cd and start rebuilding :(

that's all I can think of now..wait there's one more.

check your boot.ini file..it should look something like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\=MS-DOS

see where it says disk# and partition number?

0 for disk is normally the c: drive and 1 is the d: and so on...
1 for partition is the 1st partition, 2....etc...

check this file and see if the disk is set to 1, if so, it's prolly looking for d: which was where your w2k was installed. just change it to 0...

I am far from an expert in Win2000, but I have a thought. If I understand correctly, Win98 & Win2000 could share the same swap file if setup that way. If you were to take the Win386.swp file from Win98, would 2000 see it as a usuable page file if copied? I am also trying to figure out what the Win2000 page file is called? If you could figure that out, you should be able to reduce the size of it from one of your other 2000 systems to fit on a floppy(s), and copy it over. I would imagine that 2000 would then increase it to the proper size upon boot up, or trying the repair option again after the reduced page file is restored may correct it to the proper size.

This may not be correct, but I am just trying to give you some ideas.

EDIT: Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?? If you could get in there you should be able to restore the page file.

You probably aren't goign to get jack done unless you log into your administrator account. If you can't remember your administrator account password, then you are screwed and there is nothing to do except reinstall. Unless you have another account with administrator rights.

I almost hesitate to ask, but what started this problem? What was the last thing you did before you started recieving this error message?

Sigh

Assuming that Win98 is working, and you have NOTHING worth keeping on your Win2K disk, please do us a favor and reinstall Win2K with all drives attached. (Yes, you can install Win2K on your D: drive, but have the C: connected._

If you are not willing to go to that extreme, try this.

Connect both drives. Boot into Win98.

Edit system.ini as follows:

...

[386Enh]
PagingFile=C:\pagefile.sys

...

Reboot back into Win98. This creates pagefile.sys.

Now, try to boot Win2K. I am thinking that Win2K is seeing its own drive as C: and not D: as you had hoped (hence the link above). But all is not lost. Do the Win98 bit again with both drives connected. This time change the line in system.ini to read 'D:\pagefile.sys'. Reboot into Win98 to ensure the change.

Try to boot Win2K again, this time while disconnecting the Win98 C:. (You might be able to do this in BIOS and avoid physically disconnecting the drives. Just change the boot order to the second disk.)

One of these two methods *should* get you past the "no page file" error.
