I have a 20 gig HD, but windows wont see anything past 7.86 GB's of it, I've tried formating, and Fdisking, and nothing is seeming to work.

if you could help me out he I would be greatly aprecitive.

You're talking about the Maxtor, right? Have you tried using their MaxBlast software to do the "fdisking"/partitioning, etc.? Does it show as 20G in the bios? In Device Manager, do you see any problems with the IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controllers section?

Is the drive jumpered correctly? In other words, if the 6 gig drive is your primary drive on the Master end of the IDE cable, is the 20G drive jumpered as a slave (the jumper pin on the back of the drive)? Have you tried it on a separate IDE Controller?

Just ran across this article...will investigate more but for now read the first paragraph:

Maxtor and Win2K SP1

OK, have you tried using Windows 2000's Disk Manager to see what it's reporting? For example, it may be possible that it's only seeing a certain amount of partitioned/formatted space, but maybe more is showing up as unallocated...

Start/Administrative Tools folder and select Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management...

Seems like you're savvy about a lot of this stuff, so hope you're not offended by the suggestions...just trying to think of everything.

Im savvy about computers, however a newbie at win2k :p

in disk managment it only shows 7.88gb, none unallicated. I think its a problem with SP1 I am uninstalling it if that does not fix it, I may format the drive and reload windoze. I have narrowed it to windows because the drive reads everywhere else. except in windows programs and windows itself.

the bios is set to auto (which has set it to LBA translation automaticly.)

Wen i installed SP1, win would load up to the password screen and die.
i had to format the damn HDD.
I'm waiting for SP56 .....
By that time should be ok with the HW i have now ( and obviously way behind the newer ...)

Well, I'd try reinstalling sp1 now...now that you know what caused it. Maybe something didn't take correctly. Glad to be of assistance.
