hey
i was just wondering how come my win2k was soo bad for gaming. everyone is always seeming to praise it, but when i play games... its just really bad.

here's my comparison with it against win98

counterstrike FPS= 25-90
win2k FPS= 5-30

here are my specs:

aopen ax64 motherboard w/ onboard audio
384mb sdram
voodoo 3 2000
maxtor 30gb 7200 rpm
netgear ethernet card

First of all, what processor are you running? Did you turn off Vsync yet? Did you overclock your video card yet? Did you install vcontrol yet? available Here.....

First of all, a Celeron 400 is the bare minimum that I would install Win2k on for games, I seriously reccomend a 700 or higher CPU, anyways, to determine the settings on V-Control, you need to know the refresh rates that your monitor supports, if not, you could actually burn out your monitor. Next, on the Overclocking utility built into vcontrol, make sure you mount a small fan on the heatsink on the video card or you will only be able to overclock it by 5 mhz, I believe the v3 2000 is defaulted @ 143, with a fan, 166 should be no prob, without a fan, I would NOT go over 150, remember, your mileage may vary since all chips are not the same and that I am in no way responcible for any problems that you may have, got to the overclocking forum if you need any hints about overclocking.

First of all, look at your drivers, I used that card before I got my Radeon and its a great performer with games in win2k. I used the beta 1.04 V5 drivers with the most success. You shouldn't have to overclock the card, its limited by the cpu anyway, all you'll do is shorten it lifespan. Your not even close to your refresh rate, so VControl will have no effect, That big of a difference between win98 and win2k has to be drivers.

How does your system otherwise perform in win2k?

Are you using the administrator account to play games? You need to make a user or power user account to play games out of. This will increase your fps in a game like counter strike by over 30fps. There are a lot of services that run as administrator that you dont have when you are a user or power user.
