is win2k better than ME for me ?

i got it ... what about my voodoo3 on it ? ME is faster than 98SE in gaming ...

Mmmm better than ME.

Well it depends. What is the main use of your system??

Win2k offers greater stability, plus extra security, encryption, compression and less defragmentation of files - thats if u use NTFS...(recomended to get the full benefit of Win2K).

Some older games can be a hassle to run but almost all recent games work fine - and can sometimes run faster.

Have you thought of dual booting?? (Dead easy to set up).
That way you can try Win2k but still have ME and if after a while you find you prefer 2k then remove ME (or vice versa). This is what I did.

Personally I much prefer 2K to ME - ME tries to be too user friendly...

Voodoo 3 should work fine - one of my old PC's has an old Voodoo Banshee which works no problems in Win2K.

Microsoft doesn't reccomend upgrading from ME to Win2k.

You can get Win2k here if you want to dual boot

well ... i basicaly just play quake 1 and 3 ...

i've asked today and some told me ME is better just for gaming ...

well ... there's no issue in dual boot .. but when/where to gather linux in this amount ?

i dont think its that bad ... but as i've never used ...

win2k gaming is going to hold it's own vs. me here with some of the newer drivers. If you want to be able to play games and then not have to reboot, definitely to go win2k.

I'm pleased to see that the speed-freaks haven't come in here yet and told him that he needs more RAM. Matheus, unless you expect 3dsmax to load in under 2 seconds, or something else ridiculous like that, you will be fine with the amount of RAM you have in Win2k.
However, if you currently do or plan to get in to stuff like Maya, 3dsmax, or Photoshop (all very memory-intensive programs), I would advise that you grab another stick of RAM if / when you get Win2k. A total of 256MB (i.e. add another 128MB RAM stick) would be fine for you if you just plan to do basic work in these memory-intensive programs, but you might consider stepping up to 384MB or even 512MB if you are going to be doing this for a business. HTH.

ok .. well ... here in brazil, pc stuff is not that cheap as there in usa ... so is not that easy to have NASA's pcs ))))

i really plan to get more 256MB but it's not that urgent, Slack8 runs fine this way ...

this week i'll get my cd burner and after cleaning my hard disk i'll be free to install a new OS

a friend of mine said XP is coming soon ... is whorth waiting ?

Well, if you've been reading the off topic forum much at all, you'll know that there is much variance of opinion on this topic. I personally am not too impressed with it, and am going to wait for MS to come out with a service pack or two for it before upgrading.

all softs i have for ME should work fine in 2k ok ? cause i'm often capturing video in a bt848 card ...

i'll try it ... as i never had such experience ... just this NT here at college ( but i just use ... no admin pass )

Just a bit of advise concerning log-ins. When you set up Windows 2000, it will ask if you want one user to log in automatically, that is, so you won't have to enter a password. If you are the only person using the computer, or if you aren't too concerned about security, just tell it to use the Administrator account all the time. This will be the least amount of hassle, and will be easier for you as you learn the new NT based operating system. Or, if you're in for some fun, set it up for multi-user, CTRL+ALT+DEL login, etc, the first time you install, like I did.

i live in something like a student house, not in my home-town
so .. as the others look towards to use my pc ... i'll have some fun in making some restrictions to their's account ...

so .. i may say if a user is not able to burn cds ? regardless of the soft it uses ?

this guy used to burn cds in a pc a friend of him had and he was not admin ... he said easy cd creator refuses to work for a non-admin user but mp3xxx, read from mp3 and burd audio cds did ...
so ... i'd like to make this unable for all but me ...

I'm pretty sure you can restrict access to devices in Linux by chmod'ing /dev/whatever_your_cdr_is, but I haven't the slightest clue about how to do this in Win2k.
Wait, a slightly less elegant way to do it would be to put him on a restricted user account, so he couldn't install software, and then change the permissions on all CD burning software so he couldn't run it.
