Win2k drive sharing

i just installed 2k. It can see shared drives on my other comps fine, but when i share a drive on this one, it calls it C$. i know this was used in 98 to hide shares, but you could easily remove it. How do i make my drive shared full access w/o password to everyone on my network?

Don't change the C$. Make a new share - call it CC or whatever you like, and give access permission to everyone.

but then i have it shared twice right?

does c$ do the same thing it used to in win98?

when i share it as just C or something, the other comps ask for a pw, but nothing works, how to disable this?

The $ shares are hidden shares that the OS creates for its own purposes, not for our use. We create new shares for our use. For access, the standard way is for people to log on to the w2k computer over the network using a User /Password that has been created in w2k. Giving access to Everyone means every User that has been created in w2k. Some people enable and use the default Guest account.

If you remove C$, it will get added again. Its what they call an administrative share. All harddisks are shared like that, so if you have 2 drives, you will have C$ and D$. Other administrative shares you always have are ADMIN$, which is your winnt directory and IPC$.

Just add another to C:\ if you need to share your C drive.

If you want to have some control over which computers can access your system:

1) get each computer name that you want to have access to your system.
2) create a user account using the computer name as the user name and put in a password for them to sign in. (using the computer name as as the user name will allow win9x systems to access your system because they will always default the user name to the computer name when accessing network resources)

This will allow you to limit who can get on your computer and will allow the win9x systems to acces your system.

ahhhhh i see! so i have to setup a user DAVID on my 2k comp to allow the computer downstairs named DAVID to access it, because currently, 2k isn't recognizing DAVID as a user so it wont give it access.

Actually, If you want your Win98 machines to recognize the Win2k shared drives, you need to enable the Guest account.

Start - Settings - Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management
Select "Local Users and Groups" - "Users"
right-click on "Guest", select "Properties". uncheck "Account is disabled"

Yeah, unless your access the computer from a domain, the computer assumes that any user created in the win 2k box as a local user is just that, a local user. The guest account is what is needed to access the computer.
