I just got rid of the cancer of WinXP on my computer and Im running win2k again. Anywho, I completely forgot how to allow users to use cd burning software such as Nero. Can someone help me out here?

What do you mean allow users? They don't have access and get a permissions error? You could put them into power users group or give them security rights by right clicking the folder.

no, cd burning programs require direct access to the burner. Only administrators get direct access. I dont want the other users to be administrators. I thought there was some way to allow users to get direct access to the hardware so they could use cd burning software.

I fixed it... I had to enable some cd-rom thing in the security options in the group policy editor

Could you be a little more specific about how you solved it and help some others out?

Thx

I ran gpedit.msc(or you could just run Local Security Policy in Admin Tools). In there, go to Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policy->Security Options. In there find a policy called "Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only" change the local setting from disabled to enabled. Now nero will work while running as a user.

Ok thx. That seems to be the standard answer. Mine was enabled by default and this switch seems to make no difference. Must be some other level restricting it.

I will have to give this a shot... I wonder if backup capabilities would help?
