i did a tri-boot on someone's machine, set it up for Win2k English and chinese and win98 chinese. i wiped off the 2 chinese os's and now just the original english os is left on there. but in the boot up os selection screen i still have the options to choose those other os's which are gone. How do I change it back to english, because I need to reinstall the Chinese OSes later? And how would I get rid of options for operating systems that aren't there?

yep. btw, boot.ini is in your root C: directory.

it might be a hidden file though, so make sure you enable "show all files"

i got a similar problem as well. how do i change the values for the boot menu? for instance it says Win98Se and WIN2k Pro as my boot options but i get rid of win98se but it still shows up. i don't want to disable the menu totally, i just want to get rid of the win98se option.

just edit that boot.ini like we've said.

open it up in notepad and remove the line referencing the deleted OS

There is a boot.ini. CHeck the root of your C drive (even if Win2k is on D:). Either choose to show hidden files or jsut start->run->"boot.ini".

ok, mine must be messed up. there is no boot.ini in the root directory. the only boot.ini file is one that is in the partition magic folder, possibly for boot magic which i don't use. that boot.ini file does not have the other os listed. should i just make a new boot.ini file for win2k then? what should i do? thanks in advanced.

win2k is the only os left. it is installed on c:. win98 was installed on d: and was wiped off by a simple format d:. i wasn't sure what was the right way to get rid of an os after you load it so i simply formatted the drive. that might be the cause of my problems. i am using the microsoft boot manager.

and just to verify, you DID enable the checkbox for "show hidden files" and also "show system files" for that root directory of yours? the bootloader HAS to be there.

I don't remember the actual click sequence but you can also try going into the control panel and system variables. There is a drop down box that shows the other os's. Make sure it says Win2k fast detect. There's also a box below that drop down that you uncheck so that Win2k will ignore the boot loader.

right click on my computer. go over to the "advanced tab"

click on "startup and recovery"

select windows 2000 in the drop down box. UNCHECK "display list of operating systems" and you should be in business

Hi
If you could not find the boot.ini file (Actullay this is the only files through which you are able to see the dual booting option, so it must haveon your boot prtition), OK then atleast you can get rid of ythe option.
Open Control Panel-- Open System Folder -- go to advance tab -- go to startup and recovery, set default operating system to Winodws 200 and uncheck the display list of Operating System.. restart the machine and see the change, but do not forget to set Default OS to Windows 2000, otherwise you will not be able to boot any OS anymore.
The boot.ini run like this
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

You must have searvc\ching your boot.ini file in Explorer. The explorer will not show you the OS files until you uncheck the Do not show Operating Systems Files(Recommended)..
