Thought I would post this here since there is so much more love here than tech. support and this is on my only sys. at home -

I'm getting a error at the windows boot screen - the one right before the splash screen. I don't have the exact error but it's something to the effect of "/Windows/System/" file is corrupted, please run repair using your windows 2000 cdrom"

-I've tried repairing it but still no go, same error.

Any suggestions?

-Is it beyond fixing?
-Can I install winxp and have some dual boot sequence. If this is the case, can I then login through winxp and fix win2k?

-My harddrive is partitioned into 2 halves, c: and d:, d: is soley used for storage, no programs are installed in that directory. Can I install winxp in c: and still use d: as normal? I would think I can ...

TIA!

yeah you could but my suggestion would be to just fdisk everything and install winxp.

If the repair didn't work..here is what I would do..

make a note of all the file name and locations

reinstall w2k in a folder called d:/deleteme

boot into w2k and find those files that it said was corrupted then copy the ones from your d drive over top of them.

Reboot to your c: vers of w2k and if it works just delete your deleteme folder and edit your boot.ini file back the way it was..

It's a hit or miss situation depending on what file it said was corrupted.

If this doesn't work trying running repair on your c drive installation after you have copied the files over...

In the future make a backup copy of your winnt directory and any other directories so that you can import them in case a repair doesn't work...btw did you have an ERD with the registry info?

No you can't..some files it is ok to copy over and some it is not..just try it and hope it is one of the ones that it is ok to copy over

running a repair after you have done this might be enough to fix it if the couple of files that you transferred didn't fix it.

run chkdsk on the affected drive partition. hell, run it on all your partitions. should clear up your difficulties. make sure to use the chkdsk on the win2k cd
