I have read on all these posts something about ATA-100 hard drives and Win2k not working properly. Is that just pertaining to incompatibility with the Promise controller card, or also with motherboards that support ATA (I have the Gigabyte 7DX). While it might be that I couldn't tell the difference between ATA-66/ATA-100, I'd like to make sure I'm getting the most out of my computer. Is there some way I can check? (P.S. My computer originally came w/WinME, and I formatted and installed Win2k instead)

I'm guessing that there isn't away to seek if the hard drive being used at ATA-100 or not, based on the response:frown:

I think that so long as your Promise controller is working properly, you should have ATA100 support. You can check using Sandra 2001 hard drive benchmark, you should get a score of 20,000+ if ATA66/100 is working. Good luck.

I think my post was confusing, because I don't have a Promise controller card.. I think. I was under the impression that my motherboard supported ATA-100. Actually, I a bit confused

I have heard that ATA-100 doesn't work properly in W2K. Not having ATA-100 myself I am not sure to what extent it doesn't work ^^ But the problem should be fixed up in the upcoming SP2.

:) Hello, :)
I'm here to clear it all up for ya. ok Win2k worksgreat and fine with ATA/100 forget all the BS you heard. Now if you use a ATA/100 drive on a mobo that only supports ATA/66 drive , your ATA/100 runs at ATA/66. You must use an ATA/100 controller or supported mobo (motherboard)to get full bandwith of HD. :QIn your case your good to go, your mobo GA-7DX is ATA/100 compatible so you are getting it all.:Q

Check for newer drivers on the Gigabyte Website.

Thats not true, Yes Intel chipsets with ATA100 work because Intel has drivers that make Win2K support it. As does Promise and some others... This MB has the VIA southbridge which does not have drivers which fix the problem with Win2K. SP2 will fix the problem as will the upcoming VIA IDE drivers once they fix them... right now they have problems with CDRWs. For now you will have to download the software from your HD maker and set the drive to ATA66 instead of ATA100.

Well i truthly believe quick6 was right. VIA doenst support ata100 in win2k because of compability problem ...that does not mean win2k do not support ata100.

yah thats wat i mean if you can find the correct driver for your via sure win2k will support ata100. I was wondering why ppl keep on saying win2k does not support ata100....it just the matter of getting the right driver.

I dont know why some people have trouble with the ata100 and 2k
I have 2k pro and an ATA100 IBM 75GXP, and a Promise ATA100 controller. I never had any problems and I still dont, runs great!

I have win2k and the latest Drivers from Intel(815e), but I do not use IDE for my CD-rom drives(scsi). I know for a fact that the driver causes problems with burning CD's, Intel's website has a forum on this, and most people are resorting to the original drivers that came with their motherboards to burn cd's but will not run in ata100 mode. My IBM drives benchmark @ 23000 with sisoft sandra in win2k with these drivers from intel(I think 6.03 version?).

I have the Abit KT7-raid with Win2k, sp1, and via 4 in 1 1426a with ATA support enabled and I'm only reaching 66 mbs. It works fine, without a doubt, but with my system this is the best I could reach in Sandra.
