Win2K and Ram...

I know there has been a lot of threads discussing the benefits of making the 128mb-256mb jump in Win2k so I won't go there. 🙂 I do, however, wonder about the 256mb-512mb jump for performance. I have been using 256mb since I started using Win2K and it seems fine. Since ram is insanely cheap right now, will I get a marked increase in system performance and thus make the purchase worthwhile if I go for 512mb?

Thanks,
BD

First of all, Windows 2000 will take all the ram you have. I was running Win 2k 6 months ago with only 64 mb of ram and put a 256 mb in and it ran even faster. Then I put in another 128 stick and it ran faster. It is like the more you put in, the faster it runs. That is the beauty of Windows 2k. 🙂

Thanks for the input. I had a hunch that was the case... if anyone else has some experience with this I would like to hear about it.

You'll see a bit of a performance boost, nothing major. Things will happen just a *bit* faster because Windows basically never has to put anything on the hard drive.

I've been using 768MB of RAM with Win2K for a couple of months. I'm about to drop back to 512MB because I didn't see that big a performance boost.

same here.. no real increase in performance...now back down to 512MB

look in task manager and see how much memory you use if youre close to using all your physical memory buy more I have 256 in my machine and put another 128 in it just to see what would happen...nothing but i only use about 180 according to task manager.

Well, I noticed a huge improvement in speed over 256MB while having Photoshop, 2 3D Studio MAX 4 and a couple of IE windows open at the same time. Of course, you'll only benefit from it if you use apps like those.
