win2k and DHCP problems

I am having some DHCP problems with my Win2000 desktop that I can not seem to figure out.
If I manually enter a valid IP address the networking works just fine. However, if I try to use DHCP I never get an IP address. I have a Win98 and a Linux box on the same hub as the Win2k machine and DHCP works fine on them. So I am sure it is not a DHCP server problem. When I try "ipconfig /renew" from the console I get an error message saying "unexpected network error."

Any ideas?

Hold on. Which one is your DHCP server? Are you trying to get an ip for the computer that is the DHCP server itself? DHCP server should have a manually fixed ip address as far as Ms DHCP is concerned.

He may have a router that is set up as the DHCP server. I am not sure about your problem but I always use static IP addresses for my home network. It makes everything easier to use and I always know what IP is on what PC. It would be hard to keep track of IPs for 5 PCs if they would change every time they were turned on.

The DHCP server is a Lunix box sitting elsewhere in the building on another domain. All routers are configured to route the needed packets. All other machines are working just fine, but this one Win2k box. It is definately not a hardware problem, as it works with a fixed IP. Other machines on the same line as this box are working just fine as well, so no router problems.

For those wondering, this is a setup of about 300 machines and 10 routers. All linked up with a T3.

You tried "ipconfig /renew". Did you try "ipconfig /registerdns"?

When you say that if you try to use DHCP you "never get an IP address", how long have you waited?

I assume you checked to be sure that the DHCP Client is set to Automatic and is running on the W2K box.

Hey, I'm sorry. I can only think of the dumb stuff because it's the sort of stuff I'd screw up!
