Hey, anybodt have any news about Win2k Advanced server? is it like win2k pro with all the server components? or is it a stripped down version without any of the other 2k pro stuff???
Thanks!!

So it's everything pro, server, and others?? and will normal drivers for 2kpro work with it??

So far the only thing I found that would not work on Win 2000 Advanced Server was McAfee Anti Virus. Other then that it works really well for me.

urbantechie,

Windows 2000 DataCenter is the best... the mother of Windows 2000, but you can't buy the OS. It can only be purchased from a few selected vendors (Compaq, Dell, etc.) when you're ready to buy their server(s). Microsoft is trying to limit the hardware support to a small number so DateCenter can more stable under a control environment. Just like UNIX, you can't buy UNIX directly... you buy it along with the server(s). It's a good strategy to compete against UNIX.

So you guys run advanced server as a workstation?? or just as your server for other workstations?? I was thinking about checking it out but it will only run on my big machine, which is really the only one I use... smart? or should I just bag it. I need something stable... also.. I have re-installed 2k pro 3 times within the last 3 days because whenever I install SP1 it gets all pissed off and decideds not to work for me.
Can I get some pro's and Con's?
Thanks!

urbantechie, how much did you have to pay for Win2K Advanced Server? Seems to me that no one should be running Advanced Server on a personal workstation. That's Win2K Professional's job. AS is going to cost you well over $1000 more than Pro and won't be as performance tuned for running local applications as Pro.

It's a breeze to run ... easy as 1-2-3. 🙂
Configure your server settings 'on the fly' !!!

I running it with an aging Abit BX v2.0 motherboard with 512Mb ram, P3 550e and 2x 20Gb IDE RAIDED.

I use it to run FTP severs, dedicated game servers and as a Web server ALL at the same time behind a Linux box ... not a problem 🙂

Wow, That expensive huh? I was just thinking about using it to learn for MSCE study. Oh well, looks like I will have to just read the books for this one. Thanks for all the info.

I'd make sure your drivers work for Win2k Advanced Server. I've tried it and my video card drivers didn't work. They do work for win2k professional of course.
The reason I wanted to run Advanced Server was because of Terminal Service. It's really smooth and fast compared to any other remote access solution.
Since my ATI AIW 128 drivers didn't work, I couldn't play 3D games. So I had to decide between gaming a remote access. I chose gaming of course. I now have to suffer with using PCAnywhere as my remote access solution.

I use it on my personal workstation. I didn't want to shell out the Big bucks for this OS, so I just got the 4-month trial version. I needed it to mess around with SQL Server 2000. Anyways, I dual boot with W98, just as a preperation for when the trial time is over and I need to delete and reinstall.😉
