Win2000, Sound Blaster AWE64, Altec Lansing ACS54 Speakers- Cracking sound while playing music

hey there fellas.
i find that my speakers crack when i play music in win2k using winamp 2.7 and the sound blaster awe64 sound card w/ altec lansing acs54 speakers.
any idea what's going on?
btw, when i play the same song (it's a soundtrack) watching the movie (gladiator if you must know ), i do not get any cracking.
please help

since i was a little unclear here's a brief summary-
win2k, awe64, altec lansing acs54, winamp 2.7= cracking
win2k, awe64, altec lansing acs54, windows media player (gladiator dvd)= no cracking

I have AWE64 and Altec Lansing ASC90 speakers. I haven't noticed any cracking while using winamp. Does the speakers crack just once, sporadically, or constantly? Also, is the crack a short burst or a drawn out cracking?

the cracks are not constant- they are in fact sporadic, short bursts.
they do not happen throughout the entire piece- only during specific moments in that piece.
but the cracking at times is rather annoying and for quite a long time in some cases.

i lowered the volume in the win2k sound control and raised the volume from my speakers and this seems to be working well, so far.
