win xp won't install on my old pII 400, even with a clean boot. i'm about to go to a duron 1.3, or s 1600 xp. on a k7s5a w/ 256 meg ddr.i'm going win95 towin981e towinxp all upgrades. could that be the prob? and do ya think i'll have more probs installing xp? lmk, jer
 
the board is a p6bx magellan, 224 meg dimm, fresh install o win95 to win 98, 3com 9920 modem, anything else? that's about all in the system, no sound, as far as the upgrade goes the memory is centon(ddr) tried to get xp to go to the compatibility site. no go. just tell me what info ya need. jer

Before installing XP did you run the XP compatibility program that is on the XP install CD? It will tell you, and you can print it, which hardware or programs you may have that are not compatible with XP. If that is what your problem is then during XP installation if it finds that non compatible hardware it will stop installing until you fix the problem.

I ran the compatibility program before I installed XP Pro and had to remove a couple non compatible items. One was my older USB SanDisk card reader so I bought the latest XP compatible USB version for less than $20. I installed the old SanDisk successfully on an older computer running Win ME.

The other non compatible item was software for DSL and was told to uninstall it before installing XP Pro as XP comes with a built in driver for DSL which worked to perfection first try.

You do have to do a little bit of homework before installing XP.

When you run the XP compatibility program make sure you are connected to the Internet because it will download the updates for the compatibility tests automatically if you want it to. Recommended.


 
it gets to the "what do you want to do" screen and then just stops. no compatability test, wouldn't go to the website, it just sits there. doesn't lock up the system just won't go past that screen. there are no error messages. any ideas? jer
