I don't think so. If there was, it would have been added. I don't think there's a "close" command that can be sent to any drives, since doing so can be risky (fingers not out of the way, disc not fully in the tray, et cetera).

Whoops, I'm wrong. Apparently there is such a command, but not all drives actually have it. Microsoft wouldn't put the command in since it wouldn't always work then.

There's a Linux command "eject" which apparently has a command line option that issues the close command. But I've never heard of one for Windows.

Right, Lord Evermore. It would serve no purpose with my DVD player drive - it is slot feed - nothing to close. But it does eject via software if necessary.

Use the inject command in computer management, under removable storage. Expand removable storage, expand libraries, right click on the drive and click inject. If the drive is already open, it will close. If it is closed, it will open for you.

Wow, that's a long process just to get to a drive open/close command. And it's not as simple as just clicking the Inject command, there's a Wizard to go through. And that's a pretty complicated way to basically do nothing more than insert a CDROM and have Windows open the contents of the disc.

Hey I didn't say I use it :) I just know it's there. I don't have a problem opening and closing my cd tray manually.

Yeah, I figure my hand is there anyway...

But, if he's making an automatic disk changer, it'd be easier to use software than design something that can press the button. :)

How about Wizmo? This is a very small utility (37 KB) from Steve Gibson of GRC's Shield's Up! You just insert into your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder and write your own shortcuts and commands to it. I use this to logoff, hibernate, reboot, shutdown, tray open and tray close. It's a great little utility.

My Windows 2000 CD Player (Accesssories>Entertainment>CD Player) can do it if you press the eject button when it's open.
