My university has a discount software program that allows you to purchase XP Pro for about $40. I don't know about if you're a high school student, however.

Newegg allows you to purchase an OEM XP Home for $90 if you purchase it with hardware. What does that mean? Here's the answer in the FAQ on their website, "These items may not be purchased without another non-software item from our store. Any non-software item in our on-line store will be sufficient. There are no minimum dollar requirements or specific hardware requirements." That basically means a $5 cable would be sufficient.

I love it when resellers do this... that statement they made is false.

The requirements for OEM software (the OS specifically) dictate you purchase a non-peripheral piece of hardware that is integral to the computer's use.

so that would mean that you could just purchase a 5 dollar IDE cable ?

LOL, maybe, depending on who did the audit. Since IDE drives include cabling, it could be argued that it wasn't a necessary component.

=P

As long as it's integral, it counds. Resellers often leave out that part, and then businesses end up getting burned for it (they are the ones that usually get audited).

If we're buying OEM software, there is a good chance we got an OEM drive. OEM drives don't come with cables... 😀

This is from DaPunisher on another thread:

Hello everyone!
Here is a posting, from the product manager for Windows XP64, Brian Marr, in the
microsoft.private.windowsserver_64bit newsgroup:

4. The OS will be sold through System Builders and Distributors.
You can either purchase it pre-installed on a system builder PC or just
purchase the OS with some piece of hardware. As Darrell mentioned on
another thread, this can really be anything (a cable, for example). If your
system builder of choice wants to only sell it with high-end components, I'd
suggest finding a new place to buy your equipment.

Notice a Microsoft employee (Product Manager of Window 64 no less) states that buying oem Windows (with a cable) is a good way to go. So I highly doubt it is illegal or immoral to buy Microsoft Windows with a cable if a Product Manager of that Windows says it is a grea way to do it

I would suggest you go to www.neweeg.com and look at their OEM XP, it's the best place online when it comes to buying anything computer related. I would suggest you buy the OEM version because it's cheaper you don't get the box with all the useless paper stuff, but it's the same as the retail version.
