I was asked a question today by a co worker that I had no answer for so I am coming here for help. Can the WinXP remote desktop be managed from the internet? Meaning if I have a WinXP system, a dyndns connection for my DSL, and terminal server client software can I do this from the net?

I tried to play with mine because I am also using WinXP and DynDns on DSL, but it would not work. Probably a port issue with my firewall.

If this is possible, what port do I need to enable?

Thanks for the help.

Exactly, port 3389 (TCP only) needs to be routed to the internal IP address of the Windows XP machine.

If you don't have a good firewall box to filter the incoming Ip addy's, I would STRONGLY suggest changing the feault port or their wil be many people trying to hack your box (unless you don't even have it set for a user and pass), then you will be OWNED in no time.

Thanks mboy. This is something that I am well aware of. I am setting up a smoothwall box to help strenghten my network and I did find an article on how to change the default port. I do have all my XP systems set up with a password and with the guest account disabled. I am using dyndns and pcanywhere at the moment, but if this is an alternative, and is not a security risk, then I can dump the pcanywhere and start using it to remote admin my machine.
