Win XP Pro wont connect to internet

I reinstalled Windows on my Uncles computer due to it being riddled with viruses and spyware. I did a fresh format and clean install. It's a Sony RB30 computer. I downloaded the drivers to a flash drive and installed them on the computer.

For the life of me, this damned thing will not get a DHCP address. It either gives me a 169.x.x.x or a 0.0.0.0 address.

I've made sure I have enough DHCP addresses on my router, I've replaced the Cat5 cable, I've started and stopped the DHCP service.

No luck.

Anyone have any ideas?

The only other thing I can think of is, I am currently downloading the CD ISO of Service Pack 3, so hopefully that will fix things since I currently have no service packs installed.

Any insight would help! Thanks.

I will try that. Just tried it with another router and it wouldn't get a DHCP address there either.... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Turn on the DHCP client services.

Verify the nic is able to ping it's loopback address.

Verify you plugged into the correct nic.

I can ping loopback. I just reset my router and it still doesn't work. I downloaded the latest drivers and it doesn't work. I've installed SP3 for XP pro and I'm still dead in the water.

This damned thing will not recognize a DHCP address.... grrrrrrr.

Would not having the network cable plugged in during the windows XP install cause this problem?

Absolutely not. But using a PCI nic and accidentily plugging into an integrated card that was disabled is pretty common. If that is not the case then I suspect you have the wrong drivers installed.

Nope. Have correct drivers installed. Reinstalling windows right now.

Edit: I got the drivers straight from the manufacturer.

Well after much searching on google, I finally found the solution.

My XP reinstall didn't fix the problem, but when I changed the network card speed to 10MB/s full duplex it finally worked. Even though the thing is rated at 100mbps.

Whatever. At least the damned thing works.

VirtualLarry is probably correct, your card must be stuck in the old 1000 base x mode - actually there are 3-4 iterations of it - which chokes on unshielded cat 5 cables whereas you can use 1000 base t over unshielded cables. The standards were like a year apart. Either that or your cable is way too long and its getting signal feedback.

I've tried multiple other cables and they all work fine with my other computers. I posted the fix above. I had to drop to 10MBPS full duplex to get it to work.

Perhaps its as simple as you have bent prongs in the female adpater of the nic.

*runs away knowing the solution although slow as molasses is acceptable*

I just went out and bought a new Nic and I'm now at least 10 times faster on the download. $15 to save hours of troubleshooting is worth it.
