Win XP Pro with SP1 just installed now refuses to start up with my HP Parallel port CD-burner connected. You know why?

I have Win XP Pro installed on my computer, as well as an old external HP CD-Writer Plus 7200 which connects to the parallel port. The writer is some 6 years old and has done sterling service on my older computers.

I only decided to install it on my new computer running Win XP Pro when I saw that HP had uploaded an XP-driver for the writer on their web-site. The writer installed well and worked just fine, even writing 4 times quicker than it had ever done on my older computers.

However, after I have installed Service Pack 1 for Win XP the writer has not worked. When I start up the computer with the writer plugged into the parallel port, the start-up process just stops after the initial screen (the one with little blue bars scrolling beneath a Win XP logo).

I believe the problem must be related to SP1, but I'm not sure. It started after I installed the service pack. If anybody have a clue I'll be most grateful to hear your advice.

You tried booting into safe mode? You could either remove it from Device Manager and let XP detect it again and reinstall it or try reinstalling the driver or even an older driver,it could just be a simple driver conflict,if you can get into safe mode go to System Information and have a look at "Problem Devices" it might give you more info on the problem.

HP uses a wierd driver to transform the parrallel port into a software SCSI. Try to find the supplier of the software SCSI and see if they have a newer driver than HP. I'll link if I remember the site.

There's a little trick that may work for you.

In win2k if you go to the LPT port properties, on one of the tabs there is a checkbox for 'Enable Legacy Plug & Play Detection' I'm assuming they left this in XP also. Pull your burner, check that box, reboot then reconnect burner, and run add/remove hardware. Worth a try...
