Win XP Pro SP2 loads until the destop then hangs...

All was fine and well with SP2 until about 1 week ago. It boots up ok until it reaches the desktop whereby it will pause and do nothing except some HDD activity. I can move the mouse but no right click, no menu access and no desktop icons are present. A quick CTRL+ALT+DEL and a logoff then back on again brings things back to normal. Is there a solution for this problem besides the logoff/on? Its damn annoying and only started happening with SP2. I've seen this problem on 3 machines now in 1 week, the other 2 being a NF2 and a KT600 Asus board.

My specs:

Antec AMG1080 430w PSU
Asus A8V Deluxe Rev 2.0 via v4.55
Athlon64 3200+ (939) bios 1008
1gb Kingston HyperX Pc3200 2-3-2-6 dual channel
Leadtek GF 6800GT nvidia 61.77

Should i go back to SP1? Sounds like a good plan even though i don't really want to :/ Any help/thoughts appreciated.

A couple of things to try:

Go to CONTROL PANEL \ ADMINITRATIVE TOOLS, then double-click SERVICES.
(or go to START \ RUN and type services.msc )

Double-click the COM+ Event System service
Click the Log On tab.
Under Log on as, verify that Local System account is selected (normally the DEFAULT setting).

Double-click the Network Connection service.
Click the Log On tab.
Under Log on as, verify that Local System account is selected.
Make sure that the 'Allow service to interact with desktop' option is turned on.

Also, check the EVENT LOG for any ERRORS and post ERROR CODE & SOURCE here.

YOu can try booting in the safe mode and see what happens if it allows you then you can try the services.msc things if not start the win Xp setup and go in recoverly console after reaching there go to dos and uninstall SP2 and then reboot
If you so keen for Sp 2 backup ur data Do a Debug on ur HDD and then Install Xp and upgrade to sp2 before installing any software that will do the trick
